Postby blondebabe1977 » Wed Oct 18, 2006 9:11 pm

Hi can anyone please tell me if your credit history in the UK is taken with you to Cyprus. Or do you get a new credit history in cyprus.

Thanks for any help received.

Hi Blondebabe.

I'm sorry to guess what your UK situation is; But.

Its very easy to open a basic bank account here in Cyprus, all you need is your passport and an address - a rented property is OK - you will need to take the rental agreement with you also.

Any UK debts that a person has walked away from 'can' be persued (sp) if the bank or company think it is worth going all that way!

A lot of people take FREE advice from the CAB in the UK first - as there are many ways to sort debts out!

I hope this helps - my wife is an X bank manager! If you need any advice email us on [email protected]

IN Cyprus they only check your account behaviour, there are no credit checks. If they see a salary or amount of money in your account on a regular basis, or sufficient savings, they will approve your loan requirements etc. There is no European wide credit system (yet, but watch out...!). So your UK credit rating will only catch up with you if you are ''chased'' through the courts...., but even then it would need to be a serious case before banks would have any jurisdiction over here (i.e. criminal proceedings)

Buying a car from getting a credit card is actually two different things. In Cyprus to buy a car you get a car loan which is more like leasing. Thus if you do not pay then they get the car from you... simple. So there is some kind of assurance. In cyprus to get a loan you usually would need at least one guarantor, thus a person that could pay the bank in case you do not pay and he has to have a very clear record and almost no loans outstanding.

As for pure credit, eg. credit cards or overdraft you would need a steady job and then you will not get it unless you complete a period of time to prove your stability. Usually a bank will not give you a credit card unless you keep your current/wages account with them.

We arrived in Cyprus in June of this year. In August we gave back the car we had been loaned by a friend, and then went to a regular car dealer to buy a car. He simply phoned the bank, gave our account details, stated that my wife was earning and her salary would start to be paid into the account, hung up, filled out the forms and we had a car and a car loan !! My wife bought the car (employed) I was put down as the first guarantor (unemployed, not Cypriot, 2 months in country) and my wife's godmother (Cypriot, but not mentioned to bank) was put down as second guarantor. No questions, no checks, nothing but the fact that the car can be repossessed, and there were 2 people willing to be put down as guarantors.....but they also without being checked !!
