Postby bones » Mon Oct 16, 2006 11:53 am

Hi all, hope i can have an answer to this question, we have recently moved to our new home, i would like to start to design the garden but there is one question, can anyone help. We want to place beach stone (collected from the local beach) in the garden will the salt in the stone effect any of the plants, if they will how is best to arrange them, do they need to be washed. etc etc Thanks.

there are people specialising in garden design, some will rip you off, some will do a decent job for a decent price... u have to look. Taking sea/beach stones is prohibited actually, someone did say this to me when i was getting some :)

hi, I'm already thinking about my garden even though we're not moving until Feb! I'm desperate to see what I can grow in the way of fruit/veg, anyone any success stories?
I think you'll need to give the stones a quick wash but to be honest it depends if you are having a beach theme garden. If you are, then choosing sea-side type plants/grasses from the nursery would be fine anyway as they'll be salt resistant.
Mostly you'll need to be thinking about what sort of garden you want, what its for and how much work you want to do on it each day/week. Think about irrigation systems and shade unless you want a desert garden. These, however, are easy to maintain! There's a couple of nurseries around I think - I'm sure they'd give some good advice and here's a couple of links I found:

If I were you I would make sure to ask about the stones first and make sure it is not illegal. I think raymavuna is right and there used to be a silly law that prohibited you from getting any, especially on beaches controlled by the British bases. Cover your a$$ so you wont get in trouble.

Just go to a beach and take as many rocks as you need! Maybe it is illegal to take them for commercial purposes but nobody will tell you anything if you take a few for your garden :) Some beaches would be better without them anyways!

Well, i've always taken peebles from the beach and no-one has ever said anything to me - yet! I must admit I do only take maybe a couple of carrier bags to put in my pots and some of the larger colourful peebles as they make nice decoration and my children like to paint them! Les
