stop BITCHING AND MOANING about:

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Viewpoint » Sat Oct 14, 2006 10:31 am

Let me remind you of the heading of this thread "stop BITCHING AND MOANING about" get over it...Turkey is here to stay deal with it.

Pamuk has just brought the Nobel Prize back to which country? TURKEY...end of story. This shows the rich rich mosiac of Turkish culture and the changing attitudes that will previal in the coming years. You should really consider making Turkey a friend just like Greece rather than continue to maintain hostile and divisive intentions as you well know Turkey will be on a par with Germany France and UK in 15 years time and of course she will remember who her friends and enemies were on the way up...

(AINA) -- Nobel Prize in literature to Orhan Pamuk will strongly divide the public opinion in Turkey. His liberalism is more for public consumption to the west of Bosporus strait. The Armenian, Assyrian and Greek Genocide (1915-1917) during the Young Turk government in Ottoman Empire is too well documented to be denied by Turkey. There is an Armenian National Institute in Washington to study the Genocide. 1.5 Armenians, 750,000 Assyrians and 400,000 Greeks -- all Christians -- were killed. It was first brought to light by Henry Morgenthau, Senior, the US ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1913-1916. The Turkish government tries to attribute these deaths to hunger, pestilence and the turmoil of World War I -- which seems to have affected only Christians -- rather than genocide. But, of late, several Turkish scholars have broken their silence and spoken on the issue.

But to speak of the Genocide with regard to Turkey is like trimming the leaves but overlooking the roots. Is it not a fact that there was not a single Turk in today's Turkey before 1050? Has this nation of 67 million materialized in north-east Mediterranean without any genocide or displacement of population? The homeland of Turks is not Turkey; but Turkmenistan in Central Asia. Before the hostile advent of Turks in the region, the territory belonged to the Byzantine Empire. It had pronounced Hellenic connection dating back to 1100 B.C. It was referred to as Anatolia, or the land of sunrise, in Greek. The Ionian School of Greek Philosophy arose from its soil; in 800 B.C., 12 of Ionian Greek cities were organized in Ionian League. Greeks continued to live in Smyrna (Izmir) until 1922, when they were massacred and driven out.

That's just the point I have never tried to cancel anything out. It is you with the guilty conscience.

As for the rest of your rhetoric; It is Turkey NOW, get over it.

AND just as a little poser for you; Where did the GREEKS get all this land from that you are claiming. I heard a rumour that Greeks can be grown by just planting a seed in the soil but I dismissed it at the time. Perhaps you can tell me something different.

souroul's words show how forgiving the Greek Cypriots are and that we are trying to errase some things from our minds for the sake of peace (unlike some others).

However if we take the facts, we will see that we have never lived peacefully with the Turks on this island. Here is how it all started:

Throughout the period of Venetian rule, Ottoman Turks raided and attacked at will. In 1489, the first year of Venetian control, Turks attacked the Karpas Peninsula, pillaging and taking captives to be sold into slavery. In 1539 the Turkish fleet attacked and destroyed Limassol. Fearing the ever-expanding Ottoman Empire, the Venetians had fortified Famagusta, Nicosia, and Kyrenia, but most other cities were easy prey.

In the summer of 1570, the Turks struck again, but this time with a full-scale invasion rather than a raid. About 60,000 troops, including cavalry and artillery, under the command of Lala Mustafa Pasha landed unopposed near Limassol on July 2, 1570, and laid siege to Nicosia. In an orgy of victory on the day that the city fell--September 9, 1570--20,000 Nicosians were put to death, and every church, public building, and palace was looted. Word of the massacre spread, and a few days later Mustafa took Kyrenia without having to fire a shot. Famagusta, however, resisted and put up a heroic defense that lasted from September 1570 until August 1571.

Since then the Turks have killed us by the 1000s and violated our human rights, something that continues until today. During our common hisotry with the Turks on this island there was only a small period that the Turks were not commiting crimes against us.

Today, the Turks forget the 99% of our history, and selectively remember only a tiny part trying to find excuses for yet more crimes against us.

When you will finally stop the lame excuses?

piratis, let me give you a quote from a GC website called kypros.org:

1571- 1878 AD OTTOMAN PERIOD

In 1570 troops attack Cyprus, capture Nicosia, slaughter the population (20,000) and lay siege to Famagusta for a year. After a brave defense by Venetian commander Marc Antonio Bragadin, Famagusta capitulates to the Ottoman commander Lala Mustafa, who first gives free passage to the besieged but when he sees how few they are, orders the flaying, drawing and quartering of Bragadin and puts the others to death. On annexation to the Ottoman Empire, the Latin hierarchy are expelled or converted to Islam and the Greek Orthodox faith restored; in time, the Archibishop as leader of the Greek Orthodox, becomes their representative to the Porte. When the Greek War of Independence breaks out in 1821, the Archibishop of Cyprus, Kyprianos, three bishops and hundreds of civic leaders are executed.

So the ottomans restored the greek orthodox religion, restored the archbishop, made him the voice of the GC's when under venetian rule they had none, and then the GC's rebel so that they may have Cyprus to themselves...The captives and slaves were venetians who fought against the ottomans...not innocent GC's...

and then the GC's rebel so that they may have Cyprus to themselves

If we go by your logic, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Egypt etc should have never revolted against their oppressors. The fact is that the Turks came to Cyprus as an occupying force in the same way that Venetians and so many others before them. It is obvious that Cypriots would want liberation and revolt against them.

The captives and slaves were venetians who fought against the ottomans...not innocent GC's

You are wrong. Most were Greek Cypriots. In Nicosia the Turks were even killing the animals, they didn't make any distinctions. And the 3 centuries of oppression that followed the Greek Cypriots were the ones who were oppressed, not the Venetians or anybody else.

About the religion, you are talking as if you were making us a favor!!

The fact Kartal is that the Turks have killed and oppressed Greek Cypriots for centuries and continue doing it until today. You should admit that it is very unfair when you forget the 99% of our history and you selectively remember only that 1% that suits you in order to excuse yet more crimes and illegalities against us.

It is also very unfair that u choose to hate turks who gave you much more importance and rights than the Venetians...The Venetians treated you like pigs...3rd class citizens who werent allowed to follow their religion....Orthodox christianity was followed behind closed doors in secrecy from Venetians in fear that they will slaughter any Orthodox faith followers...I am not choosing to remember 1% of the history...it is the part of history that links in with what you quoted and nicely forgot to mention that the Ottomans treated GC's better and with respect and full rights as any TC...

Kartal, sorry but you are not well informed. The fact is that Christians (Greek Cypriots) were 2nd category humans under the Ottomans. For examples the Christians had to pay 5 times more taxes than the Muslims and Christian testimony was not accepted in courts. This is what forced many Greek Cypriots to change religion and this amounts to a big part of what today is known as TCs.

I am not choosing to remember 1% of the history

The 1% I am talking about is when TCs always go back to 1963-1974 when they are trying to excuse the illegalities of today. Even during that 1 decade they forget their own mistakes and crimes (TMT etc) and they also forget everything that happened before and after than 1 decade. As if all that matters is the decade that suits TCs better, while the crimes of Turks against us should either be forgotten or excused.
