i just have some things to say.... dsl here is expensive and not trustworthy(at least from i-choice netrunner )
i have a 512kbps dsl. i cant download torrents even if i dont use my router and i have usual connection problems....

i think that dsl is going to get much better in a year or two though

P.S Maybe some people dont have problems but many other have....

I use i-choice/netway and it is a big improvement over cytanet. A lot of people do not understand that ISP from ISP is different. They think that because they use i-choice which is the CYTA DSL service that all the ISPs would be the same. However this is very wrong, to give a comparison in the old days of the dialup connection the i-choice was your landline connection. So DSL and ISP is two different things and there are BIG differences between providers. I strongly suggest you try other ISPs until you find the best one for you.

Unless you are a bit-torrent monster or watching a lot of streaming high-resolution stuff then a lot of the capacity in a "big bandwidth" connections is not used.

In the UK i had 4Mb/256kb, over here i have 1mb/128kb and i only notice the difference when downloading large files.

On average the ping time is approximately 150ms from my house to a town just North of London which is probably too high for gaming but VoIP is fine for me using Skype, MSN Live Mess. or Vonage.

CyprusGrump - what is the ping time using satellite ?

About 700mS :(

The bandwidt of Satellite internet and DSL are very different. On satellite connection you have to add the latency time meaning the time the signal has to travel from the eath and back twice(because you are connected yto the ISP via the satellite).

Isn't there also a limit on how much volume of data you can transfer daily? In addition don't you need some kind of license to operate a two way internet via satellite. You are transmitting a signal from your house/company, what is the licensing like for these fequencies?

No you do not have to pay anything to change over to any ISP... you just cancel your subscription with one and start with the other.... then you have to login to i-choice.com.cy to connect to the new ISP...

Yes, we have the licence to operate in Cyprus!

There are limits on how much you can transfer. They vary from 1.5Gbytes to over 80Gbytes per month.

The beauty of the satellite connection is that it operates anywhere in Cyprus – even if you don’t have or can’t get a telephone line or GSM signal. Some of our customers live so far away from the major towns they don’t even have electricity or water connected to their homes!

Satellite is also an excellent stand-by or backup solution if you need 24/7 connection and the Cyta service goes down (as it did at the weekend).
