Importing a car

Postby Hazza » Tue Oct 03, 2006 6:29 pm

A friend of mine is sick of life in the UK so he is planning of moving to Cyprus. His pride and joy is his 1991 MX5 convertable. Question is, will he still pay duties and taxes if he brings it to Cyprus with him??

Car: Mazda MX5 (Imported from Japan by a cardealership in the UK)
Engine Size: 1600cc
Year Manufactured - 1991

Hi Hazza,

Your friend needs to visit the Cyprus Customs & Excise site at: http://www.mof.gov.cy/mof/customs/Custo ... enFrameSet and click on the red Ferrari - all will be revealed.

Cheers,

About £4,400 in Cyprus pounds just for the TAX!!!!

And then there is the importation costs!!

Yopu gotta be crazy to import such a car especially when there are hundreds of them available over there and that specification is approximately a 2 grand car over there.

The only cars worth taking are expensive german cars with small engines. Such as Mercedes or BMW cars with 1800cc engines or less.

GG

if he has owned it in UK for more than 6 months he wont pay duty

As long as he can prove that of course, insurance, proof of residency, bank statements, DNA test, 10 generations family tree, and any other bullshit the office comes up with when you visit them..

Actually G.man is 100% right. I immediately assumed it was a holiday car, iof you are emigrating then it should be tax free for a maximum of one vehicle.

Is there any tax relief on the purchase of the truck required to carry all that documentation?

I've heard some real horror stories about bringing a car over to Cyprus -- so much so that I've bought one here in Cyprus .

It seems that the relevant departments try everything in their power ( and sometimes beyond ) to make the process as difficult as possible.

I made the mistake of bringing my kit car...

10 months later I am still awaiting approval for a registration number...

I paid the duty, thankfully only £600 as its a 1200 cc (kawasaki zx12r motorcycle enine with 200bhp :))

They said you will need an MOT and SVA test, which I did, and now they bitch over the copy Type Approval cert from the uk...

I have a valid registration doc from UK and they just make things as hard as they can possibly be...

Damn pencil pushing idiots...

At least I still have it on UK plates, duty paid, UK road taxed and insured at the border for £90 per year...

So its them that are losing out on a registration fee and road tax

:D

you can buy insurance for a uk registered car at checkpoint charlie, between trnc and RoC...

They always say its not a problem, but there is always a queue of brits at the duty office, every morning, on their 20th visit with new documents, trying to get a sign off for no duty and registration tax...

My main problem is that they dont understand kit cars... at all... I have a car that was brand new last year in april, and registered for the first time in November, but it was given an age related plate due to the donor vehicle...

The dont believe the copy of my type approval certificate is real, they want the registration document for the scrapped donor vehicle, and this is after i have had a cyprus MOT and SVA test.. its just a joke really...

Anyway, have all the required docs for yours, and you may be okay, but as a minimum you will need:-

6 months proof of residency in EU
6 Months proof of ownership of the vehicle such as insurance
6 months proof of working in EU (or 6 months EU bank statements)
EU type approval certificate or number for the vehicle

Good luck, you will need it

:)
