Uncompromising Turkey

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Piratis » Wed Oct 04, 2006 10:52 pm

And if we don't block Turkey what will we get? Will we get legality, respect to the sovereignty and independence of Cyprus and our human rights? Or we will get just some peanuts?

Sorry but peanuts are not enough to cover the huge disadvantages we will have if Turkey is accepted to the EU without a fair solution to the Cyprus problem. (explained in another thread).

Therefore if Turkey doesn't stop the middle age practices of land grab and ethnic cleansing then they will indeed be blocked out of EU (not just by us, nobody would want such country in EU).

Piratis,
If you block Turkey and she turns her back on EU we will all lose. You have to use this window of opportunity to secure a fair settlement This does not however mean surrender to your demands. It means a settlement with give and take. How can you expect Turkey to recognise a Cyprus Government before a full settlement. A Cyprus government with no TC representation is not a goverment of all Cyprus but only a GC admin-dont care who recognises you and whether or not you are a member of the EU-this does not change the reality on the ground.

TCs should return and take their rightful position to RoC government. Turkey is the one who stops this from happening and it doesn't take anything away from the legitimacy of RoC, which is why all countries except Turkey recognize RoC.

We have nothing to give to Turkey. Turkey is occupying part of our country and they have to leave. We do not ask from Turkey to "surrender" anything, we are not the ones occupying part of their country. All we ask for is respect to international laws, the sovereignty and independence of Republic of Cyprus which is an EU member state, and our human rights.

And how to you realize this "give and take"? If we give something, will we get something equivalent. There is a Greek minority in Turkey, will Turkey give to that minority what they want to take for the TC minority in Cyprus for example?

Sorry, but from what I see Turkey only wants to take, take illegally and by force, and not give anything. As I said before, so far what Turkey is willing to give is only part of what they illegally took:

The Turkish compromise: Take illegally and forcefully a lot, give a tiny bit back = compromise.

Therefore we are already using the opportunity of EU. Turkey can give up what it is not theirs and they illegally keep, and in return they will get our help to join EU. Give and take.

Piratis,
Return to the ROC government? Under what terms? The 1960 consitution? And with everybody returning to their homes as pre 74?. Once you answer these fundamental questions and agree a settlement all else will follow.

Cant you see that is what Turkey is also saying she can only recognize a "RoC" or a new united Cyprus if there is TC representation. Until we agree something to solve this issue she cannot make a move, you to promote that we should return to the "RoC" but as Issy points out under what conditions thats the key we have been unable to agree these conditions as you are as you stated in a few of your posts also not happy with the 1960 constitutions because it gives the TCs super privileges which you will in time try to erode through the EU, will this not again cause conflict between our communities? better to agree an overall solution so that start off on the right foot and avoid the mistakes of the past. So now do you see why Turkey will not recognize the GC "RoC".
