working in cyprus . please shed some light?

Postby kelly » Tue Oct 03, 2006 11:51 am

:?
hi , i have just joined this forum, in the hope that i will be able to receive some good advise, on billions of things.

firstly, me and my family, partner, 2 year old girl and mother are hopeing to come over to cyprus and make a living over there.

my partner works on the rail way as an electrical engineer and earns really good money. we know there is no rail way out there. and he has got no other qualifications or real experence in other venues, although he has a lot of skills un qualified

could any one advise us on what the best paid jobs are in cyprus, how hard it is to find work and what to expect wages around about.

he is willing to take up course and training for any new line of work which will more likely give him permanent work out there and for reasonanle pay.

i am a childminder here in england , my mother has nvqs in care and cooking. . she works in an elderly home here.

what is work like for in cypruse for childminders and care work ,
also what are the going rates of fees charged by childminders there ?

i am pretty clueless at the moment .
be very gratefull if anyone could shine us with any light.

An average salary is between 600 and 800 CY pounds but it can be a lot less or a lot more. For childminders is probably less than that if you work for a kindergarten. But if you are a good entrepreneur then you can make a lot more by opening your own kindergarten for example.

from everyone i've spoken to 400-600 is the average wage.. which is almost impossible to live off of.. Cyprus is not the place to come to make money, it's the place to come to retire and relax. Kindergardens are everywhere and most require you to speak both english and greek.

Work is limited. The pay is very low. Your husband will find it tough trying to get a job here without Greek too. There aren't many international companies here either....Russian perhaps.

i thought it was also very english over there. we would be learning greek also. i thought that the pay would be low, but i thought that the cost of living would compensate that. it this not true.

Pay will not be high for that kind of job. You will have competition from grandparents and other relatives that would do it for free.

from everyone i've spoken to 400-600 is the average wage

Thats average for secretaries, salespeople and those kind of jobs with not a lot of experience. In my company only the cleaner gets that kind of salary. Everybody else gets more than 600.

Sales girls in, for example, Orphanides, get the legal minimum wage - about £360 pm, I think.

As far as child minding goes; there are few English speaking children here; you would need Greek almost certainly and as a 'foreigner' I suspect you would not be first choice for many families wanting someone to look after their children.

I am sorry if we sound negative but so many people's dreams turn to nightmares here; it is hard without money behind you, unless you have special skills.

Why noit come on holiday and see if there are suitable employment opportunities that are available to your husband and yourself.
