We are talking about the city of Famagusta plus a few suburbs ONLY. NOT the district of Famagusta. Its like New York city of the New York state. The area is actually very small, but was densily populated in 1974, and it includes all the hotels. Although its a small area, 50,000 out of our 180,000 refugees come from there.

The whole city and the vast majority of buildings and hotels there are today declared condemned buildings /dangerous to live in because the sea eroded their foundations. This problem of sea erosion had started before 1974. So a huge part of that place has to be knocked down and rebuilt. It will take at least 10 years after it is returned to just have the infrastructure to start rebuilding the whole town.

NB.I had a look at a small map of Cyprus measuring 19X14 cm. The Varoshia area is about 1x1 cm so I would say its about 1% of the total of Cyprus!!

In their initial plans for the invasion the Turks were not planning to take Famagusta. However during the invasion they decided to take that also. The reason they did that was that they hoped that later on they could give that tiny part back and as a return we would accept partition.

This is a good example of what "compromise" means for the Turks: Take a lot, give a bit back = "compromise"

The orders they have from their Generals in Turkey are not one inch of land back to GC dogs.

Better say the agreement they had with CIA and the Greek junta. That agreement did not include most of the areas they grabbed during the second phase of the Invasion. If it were upto them they would have taken all of Cyprus.

Indeed it was anything but worthless back in 1974. However I don’t think our capitalists would let it develop to it’s past glory even if it is returned. It would become a competitor to other already developed tourist areas like Ayia Napa, Protaras, Limassol, and Paphos. Hotel bussiness is already declining.

From a Brit looking to move to Cyprus next year, i can only see this as a step in the right direction, perhaps if everyone was to look foward to the future and NOT dwell in the past then things could move on for all sides in this dispute.

And before i get full guns aimed at me by some of the millitants on here, i am appalled that the north is still under occupation and would like nothing better for the south than to have their land returned to them straight away.

Perhaps hotel trade is dying because SOME Cypriots are spoiling it for the majority of the nice friendly people who do live there

And what should the TCs do? if they do not want to live in a GC state under GC rule and their own country. Jump into the sea and disappear?

Do you really know how we ended divided?

Yes, the north was invaded in 1974, and is NOT recognised by any foreign national goverment in the world, just like east and west Germany!!, to me no different, an invasion is still an invasion, no matter how others choose to dress it up to suit their own motivations, the sooner Cyprus is all under one goverment the better
