Tourists point of view, touching :)

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Tourists point of view, touching :)

Lunch, at a country restaurant in the hills called the Stone Tavern was the usual Cypriot assortment of fresh salads, small dishes like chard and eggs, black-eyed peas with onions, and course upon course of meats, chicken, and side dishes.

Sitting there enjoying this lunch, we thought about what our driver had said about the future of this beautiful island. He predicted that Turkey’s admission to the EU will force a compromise between Greeks and Turks. Like many Cypriots, he was quick to add that no one has a beef with the Turkish Cypriots, just with those from the mainland who invaded the country.

As we drank our Greek coffee, prepared over hot ashes with lots of sugar at the bottom, we remembered that little stone house we passed where a man and woman were sitting and thought that perhaps one day those Turkish Cypriots will be just as much at home here as their Greek Orthodox brothers. We hope for Cyprus that this dream comes true soon.

I found this on a Cyprus tourist page, written by an American tourist I believe, and I thought it was kinda touching...random I know, but hey that's Natty for you!!

It is touching I agree - but also niave. Lots of "little stone houses" on BOTH sides are no longer in existence. Where will the TC who had a farm where Larnaca airport now stands live? Where will the man who had houses built on his olive grove (Orams) live? A political situation involving billions of pounds to offer compensation to all those who lost something will take years and years! If only things were as simple .................

I agree with Tess. It is touching but a bit naive and unrealistic. I think it is very touching that my daughter thinks that her dog is a horse but unfortunately for her that doesn't make it so :P

Yes it IS a bit naive, but from a brit wanting to move to southern Cyprus next year it strikes me from the outside, that the current situation cannot be allowed to continue forever, there will have to be BIG comprimises by BOTH sides if this is to be resolved, me for one hopes that it does get sorted as it spoils the otherwise lovely island, and having visited their a few times it also spoils the people as well, Cypriots are not by nature bitter people and this should not be allowed to spoil their beliefs and ethos as well

Just my 2p's worth :)
