How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Join me in condemnation

Postby zan » Sat Sep 23, 2006 9:47 pm

I posted this on another thread and decided to open this thread as it would probably be deemed as OS elsewhere.

My post
Don’t worry too much about the politics of Kifeas VP. One of his own country men has exposed his intentions by naming the person who telephoned him with threats not to criticise the GCs as it is working against his plan. Kifeas even gave him a visit at work to back up his threats. I wonder if he had his blue beret on at the time.

As for Piratis, I have compiled a few of his postings and will be sending it to his government and also to the EU. Incitement to violence should be one of the charges. This is the advice he gave to a couple thinking of moving to Cyprus.

Helen and Mick asked:
we're thinking of moving to cyprus to live early next year but we've been reading a lot of the posts on this forum & now we're thinking again as their seems to be quite a bit of hostility towards the english & also we seem to get payed less than people that live there already.i can understand people getting annoyed with the brits who move over & moan & groan & want to change the way cyrus is,but we want to move over to cyprus as thats what we want to leave behind.
all of your replies would be appreciated many thanks

Piratis replied:
The hostility is not against the English as a whole, but against certain individuals who seem to excuse the crimes that are committed against us by Turkey, or who dispute that Cypriots should have sovereignty over the whole island of Cyprus.

The reaction of Cypriots toward those individuals is of course natural. Do you think the British would like an Arab that was coming to UK and supported the London terrorist bombings?

As long as you do not express any kind of support to illegalities and you do not question our rights over our island, and as Andri said you do a minimum effort to adjust a bit and you don't expect that Cyprus will be UK with sun, then people here will be very friendly to you and you will have no problems at all.

How soon the violence against those that choose not to take his advice will be is what is worrying the couple
.

I ask all those that condemn this type of behaviour to put their objections on this thread. Piratis as a moderator could be seen as an ambassador and voice of this forum and so I ask other moderators to join the condemnation. I also hope that this thread is not dominated by the TC contingent.

Thank you.

Well it's not very nice but I have seen much worse on forums. Personally I don't think moderators or administrators should express any views at all. You cannot act the part of prosecutor or defence counsel AND judge in legal proceedings, and whilst this forum is not a court of law I believe that the same rule should apply in order to maintain balance. What I find most disturbing about your post is that a contributor to this forum should threaten someone in the manner you described.

So what exactly do you condemn zan???

Helen and Mick asked a question and I gave them the correct answer.

Jerry, I am moderator of the Tourist and Classifieds sections, not of the general chat or the Cyprus problem so here I am just expressing my opinion. Also about what "balance" are you talking about? The balance between legal and illegal. So we should not freely call as illegal what in fact is illegal so we can promote a "balanced" semi-legality semi-illegality?

I believe that all discussions should be done within the framework of respect and legality, but I can not force anybody to stay within those limits. What I can do however is to give answers to those that show disrespect to us or support illegalities against us, and nobody has the right to take away my freedom of speech, especially when those others are allowed to use the forum to promote their illegalities.

I am bitterly disappointed with the lack of support on this thread. Perhaps it is time to clarify what I am condemning.

Many, whilst posting here, have resorted to name calling and threats. Most of us have the same reaction and think, “oh! Not again”. Some of those people have the same reaction against people arguing over the same thing over and over again but that is within the confines of civilised discussion. New people post here and repetition is inevitable. What I object to and condemn is the consistency with which this line of aggressive attack has crept into Kifeas’ and Piratis’ postings. Along with Piratis’ number crunching version of history comes abuse and threats of violence. He does not make threats as an individual but as a GC nation. What I would like to do in this thread is give the rest of the GC posters a chance to distance themselves from threats made. Although I realise that the entire GC population is not posting on this forum, a representation of that whole could be seen as doing so. Some people here have chosen to take the high ground and are not involving them selves with the main offenders but are oh so quick to jump on a new posters one line rant.
Piratis has stated that he is a moderator on another thread and has no control over peoples' input, then what does he moderate? If he indeed has no control then as moderator should he then not lead by example?

For all those that feel they cannot add their condemnation here because their hands are already soiled… Condemn, repent and move on.

zan , I do not think that the vast majority , and I mean VAST , of Cypriots would endorse any kind of aggression either against the T/Cs or the Brits. What many Cypriots condemn is the blatant disregard of sensitive issues concerning the illegal sale of their properties to uneducated unthinking beer swelling Brit who doesn't give a shit when it comes to grabbbing what appears to be a bargain. In fact the Brits responsible in purchasing illegally property not belonging to the vendor are adding to the problem of finding a solution. You and I know perfectly well that buying stolen property is a crime , be it land or goods. The Brits in Cyprus are generally well liked and considered by most natives to be the best of all foreigners , most certainly respected .
Many Cypriots such as my self have families of English , Scottish , Irish etc, and would most certainly object if a member of our family was being abused , threatened etc. My wife , who is at this moment in Cyprus , has visited our country on numerous occasions with lengthy stays , she looks English beyond a shadow of a doubt. She has never encountered any animosity and has never complained of any incidents involving abusive or offending behaviour. She loves Cyprus and adores our 3/4 Greek Cypriot and 1/4 English granddaughter .
Most English would express similar views based on their own experiences in Cyprus .

Zan, I have not threaten anybody. Saying to somebody that has committed an illegality, for example "buying" GC property in occupied Cyprus, that he will sooner or later be punished for this illegality is nothing more than informing this person of the reality.

If for you such crimes are acceptable and such criminals your friends, then what you should do is a self-criticism, instead of criticizing others for insisting on justice and legality.

However I would like to ask you some questions:

1) Do you condemn the illegal occupation of Cyprus by Turkey?

2) Do you condemn the illegal declaration of the pseudo state of "trnc" on the northern part of Republic of Cyprus?

3) Do you condemn the sale of Greek Cypriot properties in the occupied part of Cyprus?

zan you are totally right in pointing out that Kifeas and Piratis post in an aggresive and even threatening manner. Kifeas has gone as far as to want you dead. He rants on about being anyone who airs their views which differ from his to being the enemy of the GC people and I would not be suprised if he is a founder member the Eoka terrorist organised who has vowed to wipe out all TCs and unite with Greece, as he does form time to time let his guard slip to use rhetoric very similar to that used in our dark history by GCs Enosis supporters.

I condemn those who use verbal abuse to attack other posters as a way to get the other side to cave in and accept that they are right or to indirectly threaten them as a means to other posters to shut up just because thay have differing viewpoints, well noway you are just pathetic bullies who are so narrow minded that you will continue to be the cause of the Cyprus issue and why we will never find a solution, the sad part is they dont realize what they are biggots.

To be honest I (as a Brit) do not see anything wrong with this post

It seems to be a honest answer to a genuine question

But are the crimes Piratis is referring actually crimes? there are always 2 sides to a sotry and if we are regarded as Cypriots then surely our wishes should also be taken into account until a solution can be found, which is exactly the situation we find ourselves in. Until then surely you should not condemn one side and condone the other.

viewpoint I am not talking about whether something is a crime or that there is not another side to a story

I was making my remarks over the quoted post of pirates by zan which he thinks 'could be an incitement to violence'

Having read this post again before replying I dont see how he could have come to this conclusion

People have a right to disagree with what was wrote but an 'incitement to violence' ...I dont think so

To remind you this is what zan said

'As for Piratis, I have compiled a few of his postings and will be sending it to his government and also to the EU. Incitement to violence should be one of the charges. This is the advice he gave to a couple thinking of moving to Cyprus.'

And this is what pirates wrote

Can you give show an incitement to violence in the above post
