english(aliens) in cyprus

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

Hi Helen & Mick,

We've lived permanently in Cyprus for four and a half years now and have found no hostility towards us. In fact, the opposite is true - we've found the Cypriot people to be welcoming, warm and generous.

Unfortunately, there is a growing number of loud-mouthed 'we don't do it like that in England' types moving into some areas. Fortunately, none of them live near me.

Regards,

My dear Ismet. I respect your advice to people. But you can refer to Cyprus as a whole.

Do not forget that we are Cypriots First!

Wish you all the best in life

The hostility is not against the English as a whole, but against certain individuals who seem to excuse the crimes that are committed against us by Turkey, or who dispute that Cypriots should have sovereignty over the whole island of Cyprus.

The reaction of Cypriots toward those individuals is of course natural. Do you think the British would like an Arab that was coming to UK and supported the London terrorist bombings?

As long as you do not express any kind of support to illegalities and you do not question our rights over our island, and as Andri said you do a minimum effort to adjust a bit and you don't expect that Cyprus will be UK with sun, then people here will be very friendly to you and you will have no problems at all.

I would agree with that...

If you try to integrate, learn a few (at least) words of greek, and show respect for cyprus as a nation not an annexe of any other country then you will be fine...

This forum has a lot of passion on it, and sometimes people get carried away on their keyboards, but it is not representative of the reality if you respect the people, culture and country...

your advice is much appreciated

We have not had power cuts for some time now in Famagusta, so everything is very bright and nice here. Indeed many British are now discovering that Famagusta and in particular Karpas region is very beautiful and it is becoming very popular. Our beaches are the best in the world. My favourite is Club sides or better know locally as Clapsides.

you can get over 3 pounds an hour and the minimum wage is around 400cy/month, but if you're anywhere near smart you're going to be making more than that
