The law has been in place since 1996 (H&S At Work)

Whether it is enforced...erm, anyone's guess.

The other week I watched 2 Indian builders climb up a 2 storey house on the outside of the wooden scaffold.

When they got onto the roof they started to shovel the rubble off - their co-worker was working on the ground below!!!

This was on a Sunday morning - 8am. Mo management around & it was a major Cy building company...

I think that some of the EU Health and Safety regulations are already in force. All Hotels have to comply with the Health and Safety regulations and are regularly checked to ensure they have the legal requirements. They are required to have the same fire exit signage as all EU establishments. ie little green signs of someone going down a stair, not up, and illuminated fire exit signs above doors.

They were in force before joining the EU, it's just that they are not enforced correctly.

even the ones with an emergency exit, you'll find that a lot of the times the doors are locked, we were in one store and noticed that there was a padlock and chain going through the handles, another time there was so many boxes etc in front making it very difficult if you needed to get out in a hurry.
