I agree with G.Man. I got my dog from a shelter and there are both good and bad points involved. For example, it only cost 45 dollars, and he was house trained from day one.
On the other hand, he also had a severe case of separation anxiety. So bad, in fact, that he tried to jump through windows after us, did physical damage to himself and constantly crapped in the house. This happens often in shelter dogs. There are plenty of websites that claim to have solutions for separation anxiety. None of them worked. Your real choices are to drug the dog, or crate it. In my case, he calmed down after a year and a half of being crated every time we left.
Getting a dog from a shelter sounds very compassionate and is probably the right thing to do in the long run. It can very well work in the long run, but nobody should be under the illusion that it's a trouble-free process.
Good luck, Pantheman.
