Turkey guilty, fined not banished.

The Turkish Grand Prix will remain on the Formula One schedule, despite having been found guilty of breaching the sport's podium protocols at last month's second running.

The World Motor Sport Council found against the National Sporting Authority of Turkey [TOSFED] and the organisers of the Turkish Grand Prix [MSO] on the count of infringing the 'political neutrality' that the FIA holds dear. The post-race ceremony saw Felipe Massa handed his trophy by Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, who was represented as the 'president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus' - a region recognised only by Turkey itself. The elected Greek-Cypriot south of Cyprus forms the government recognised by the rest of the world.

The FIA also revealed at the time that the identities of the podium party had been delayed, leading to confusion over how to caption Talat's appearance on the rostrum.

Despite precedents - and messages from the FIA - suggesting no compromise for the violation, leaving Turkey potentially banished to the F1 wilderness for the incident, the drivers, in particular, will be grateful to learn that the race will retain its place among the summer schedule, with the WMSC deciding instead to fine the two organisations responsible for the 'incident' a combined total of $5 million.

I do not agree with people who say that any publicity is good publicity. I was dismayed at the incident from the beginning and said that it was wrong on many Forums but not this one. Unfortunatly "Cyprus Forum" is the hotbed of fanatics and not a place for serious discussions.
This is my impression but I hope I am wrong or soon it changes for the better.

5 million dollars is not a small sum but affordable. I am relieved that Turkish Grand Prix was not banned altogether.

I hope that one day TRNC is recognized world wide but this was not the way to go about it. This kind of childish and opportunist attempt did not do any good for TRNC. I wrote to many Turkish newspapers about it but none published it. They only published those comments in support of the action. Now they will blame anybody and everybody, something we are used to on the Greek side

It was probably the most expensive 2 second meaningless and fruitless publicity of Talat as "president" of the "TRNC!"

As an F1 viewer, I'm glad Turkey didn't loose the GP as it's a good circuit.
The $5mil fine is nothing really, but it sends Turkey the message that nobody is interested in their illegal attempt at settling Cyprus.

It amounts to the salaries of all the "TRNC" public servants for an entire month!

Not exactly, we have about 12,000 civil servants and with an average of 1500 dollars salary, it works out about 18 million. Anyway, it was 5 million down the drain and in my view it harmed TRNC.
