Hi anastasia

MOst Cypriots leave the less desirable jobs to cheap imported labour and have moved to property development/graphic design/marketing/banking/insurance, all of which seem to be growth industries, at least in Paphos.

hi

i have to say i too have found this VERY alarming and i think its shocking that the government has allowed this.
there should be a restriction of visas allowed to protect their own people.
unfortunately i too belive there are too many back-handers offered here- so the corrupt get richer and the people get poorer.
Education is to a high standard over here, but even so Cyprus is a small island - how many doctors, solicitors and computer experts will be making a good living in years to come!
for those who train as plumbers, electricians ets will be unable to work for the petty salaries offered to 'immigrants'
they will be emigrating to the UK the usa, australia etc., and cyprus will become like parts of the uk where it will be 'spot the local'!
we too went for a meal in Ayia Napa where the waitress not only couldn't dpeak greek but couldn't speak English!
i think petitions should be drawn forcing the governement to take notice- something i am in the process of drawing up.
anyone interested in signing can PM me or let me know on this thread.
thanks very much
chris

The unemployment rate in Cyprus is relatively low. The state of the economy is pretty good and the perspectives for the future are also good.
If there is "so many" foreigners working as plumbers, electricians... it 's just maybe because now ,with the raise of the standard of living, Cypriots don't wanna get this kind of jobs.
So i think it's useless to worry and to be afraid by the "invasion of foreigners". I think there is jobs for everyone in Cyprus.

thats fair to say for generation x and y but when I was living there most were Cypriot and say in their 30's...they are now i assume 40+ so still young and need to work
Im sure those people didnt have skills to go into blue collar jobs - does the govt support training for middle class people - I dont think so? i was just wondering what those people are doing now........

Well I thought that Australia was the only country faced by this issue. It happennning in Australia also. The difference is that we take the jobs out of Australia, into India especially IT jobs and call centre work. This way we don't have to face foreigners, see we have a miuch more calculating system, where not only we get rid of the jobs we do not wish to do, or wish to do cheaper and we don't allow foreigners to enter the country. How is that for racism?? And you guys think you have problems.

haha thats true - being in sydney half the time the calls come direct from india so when they call us here in Sydney there is no way to understand what they are saying!!! such bad service for Australian companies.....

I dont think its a racism issue for me - I dont mind who pumps my petrol but Im just wondering what the govt is doing about people with no skills looking for work or are cypriot people just happy to not do those kind of jobs - is it deemed lower class maybe for a cypriot to do them?? I dont know.....

A bit like what happened in the UK when the Cypriots, Italians, Indians etc landed in England in the 70's. .

Reminds me of Enoch Powel ! As long as these people are not fanatics, extremist, fundamentalist to Bomb Cypriot. Then ask you not to display the cross + in your own country is shocking !

[quote="G.Man"]All these foreigners will become a rod for cyprus tourisms back...
Ah once I saw you in a srange little car... never seen one like that before...
Thats what I can tell is different about the cypriot hospitality, they remember me, and treat me well...

Cypriots are learning the english accent in India and Ireland so that they can move call centres from India to Cyprus.
