new child safety laws

It looks like the UK are doing the right thing by introducing stricter laws on child safety in cars:

"Sales of children's car seats are set to jump this weekend as anxious parents go last-minute shopping ahead of new rules governing child car seat restraints that come into force on Monday.

Drivers found carrying incorrectly secured children will face a 30-pound fixed penalty or a maximum fine of 500 pounds if the case is referred to court. From September 18 all children under 12 years old must have the appropriate restraint whether it is a full child seat or a booster seat, unless they are taller than 135 cm (about 4 foot 5 inches).

The new law was introduced as part of a government's initiative aimed at preventing more than 2,000 child injuries and deaths each year".

This would be such a good idea over here dont you think?

All I know is that here, you might end up losing your child depending on what the whole safety issue was.
I remember when my daughter was 2 and my mother and brother were visiting how she was sitting all nice in her seat and they were both astonished. Y bother was all "look how good she is being don't you wish kids would be like that in Cyprus". All I said to him is" it's a habit for her. She has been in a seat since birth and that's all she knows". I don't think it is the kids' fault, it is the parents. What I don't understand is, why would anyone jeopardize their kids safety by NOT putting them in a seat anyway.

It's awful seeing kids standing up between the two front seats of the car. One sudden brake and they'll be through the windshield.

It doesn't make sense, people love their kids so much here, they'll do anything for them, yet they take such thoughtless risks with their lives.

Yes, we need to be enforcing these laws here in Cyprus. It makes me nervous every time I see a child standing and jumping around in the back seat. It should really be making their parents nervous. After all, it IS for their own safety. Same thing applies to the lack of helmets being worn by motorcyclists.

We should be protecting our children and teaching them good habits.
