Cyprus-Where is the best place to live & why???????

Postby anski » Mon Sep 11, 2006 9:02 am

Recently saw a program on Cyprus & would like your comments on best places to live & why.
Currently living in New Zealand but was planning to return to either Spain or France for our retirement years (commencing 2008) however because of tv program now considering Cyprus instead.
Would love input as I realise you all have so much experience & advice to offer.

You should be aware that property in the north - so called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is cheaper but you will probably be buying stolen land. In The Republic of Cyprus (south) standards of construction and prices are generally higher and you are less likely to get ripped off but be wary of buying "off plan" especially from small builders. Many Brits have located around Pafos but Larnaca is probably a bit cheaper, go to Cyprus for a holiday and talk to people who have moved there.

Visit the North and make your own decisions, we have plenty of beautiful locations where villas are still much cheaper and built on undisputed land. The north is not as commericalized as the south but at the end of the day the choice is yours but dont make up your mind without seeing both sides, meet the people and see first hand the beauty both sides have to offer. Good luck.

^ "TRNC" is ONLY recognised by Turkey.By buying there it would be like you support Turkeys actions, and you will probably be buying/staying in STOLEN land.It is immoral to buy land from someone who doesnt own it,I hope your not one of those greedy brits. :?

Like Jerry said many Brits are located in Paphos.I would suggest you to come here, rent a car and visit places to see what you like more.

There are many beautiful places which are not Greek Cypriot owned in the north, you will get great value for money and a taste of the real traditional Cyprus rather than the packaged destinations for young tiny boppers who are loud, rude, drink all night and sleep all day. Visit both north and south of the island then make up your mind after you meet the people and see for yourself what each side has to offer.

I am sure there are many loud drunken tourists that visit the Northern side too! You are bound to come across people like that in the tourist areas of each city. I live in the outskirts of Limassol, and I'm nowhere near those places. It is very quiet where I live.

Anyway, if you do choose the Northern side, please make sure that you do your research first and find out that the land you are buying does not belong to a Greek Cypriot. I think you would have to check with the land registrar in Nicosia? That would be the right thing to do... and that way, it wouldn't create any problems for you down the road.

Paphos is very nice. I know of a few people that have happily retired there. I would have moved there years ago, if it wasn't for my job.

As Viewpoint said, you would have to come and see for yourself.

Limassol has a pretty seafront and lively theatre life, there are concerts all the time.

It really depends on what you're looking for, and what kind of lifestyle you like. I've lived in Nicosia, but I wouldn't do so again because there's no sea - why live on an island if you can't see the sea daily?

We have so many unspoilt beautiful beaches in the North, with less traffic and congestion. They Cypriot way of life still prevails and we have not yet been taken over by multi-nationals which are only just accross the border in the Greek Cypriot Cyprus if thats what you are looking for. The Capital Nicosia is only 15 minutes away from the sea where you can eat fresh fish and drink raki as you watch the beautiful sunset going down over the Pearl of the island known as Kyrenia.

sorry dont know how to do the quotes thingy.

OMG ask a perfectly harmless question about where to live in cyprus and already the BRITISH HATE Mongers are on your case about buying so-called 'stolen land'. If I were you I would bypass Cyprus altogether and find somewhere less controversial like ermmm IRAQ!

P.S Look out for Lysi!!!

The best place to live in Cyprus is limassol. Nothing else compares with it.
16 kilometers of beaches.
Temperatures are normally 5 Celsius below the rest of all other places. i.e (40 Celsius in Nicosia : pleasant 33 in Limassol.)
25 five Star Hotels in Limassol. (Compared to 1 (one) in Nicosia and 3-4 in Pafos and nil elsewhere.)
5 Star restaurants’s serving you fresh fish right on the beach. water splashing your legs just about.
Activities never ending in Limassol: Theatre's (plays for all over the world perform on ancient amphitheatre's in the open)
Carnivals, wine festivals, the Lemesia activities, Russian ballets, Dancing groups from Eastern country's, bouzoukia, concerts, you can go pass this city.
In 20 minutes you could be in the mountains enjoying Souvla, and again in 5 Minutes for your house you could be swimming in the warm and friendly waters of the most beautiful, vibrant, exciting, central located, modern, City in the MEDITTERRANNEAN.

Anyway I could go on and on and ooon but I do not want to embarrass too much some people here!
