International community

Postby Mus » Thu Sep 07, 2006 12:47 pm

We're moving back to Cyprus on the 24th of September after spending a year in Prague and I'm wondering if there's some place where we could find a more international community or meet people from other countries. My boyfriend is Greek Cypriot and has of course lots of friends but since I'm from Scandinavia is not so easy since I don't speak Greek well enough yet and I would also appreciate having friends of more nationalities since I've gotten use to it here in Prague. So if anyone has any information about where to meet more nationalities that would be great?

well I have just moved to Larnaca and both my next door neighbours are English / english cypriots.
most people I have come across so far speak english. All the major supermarkets and shops speak good english, even the smaller shops, mechanics, car dealers that I have so far dealt with have been great.
I am English and speak very little greek although I am learning now. I have found most people very accomadating.

Hi Mus,

I live in Erimi, which is outside Limassol. As well as Cypriots & Brits I know Americans, Canadians, Ukranians, Lebanese, Syrian, Swiss, Germans, Swedes and some others I've forgotten. There are many offshore businesses in Limassol and the town has a much more cosmopolitan atmosphere that the other coastal towns.

We'll be living in the Nicosia area so far from Limassol unfortunately, I've a feeling that there's more nationalities in the towns by the sea but not so much in Nicosia district. I already know that most people speak English in the shops and it's not really about that the Cypriots are not friendly, they are fine but some are a bit reserved when it comes to speaking English and that sometimes limits things down. I'm looking for all kinds of nationalities, both Cypriots and others but I think it might be a problem in Nicosia. If any one knows where to meet a more international circle let me know. :?

Mus, my job involves going to peoples houses to install telephone and internet services all over Cyprus. Although a British born Cypriot, alot of Cypriots talk to me in English as they know I struggle when talking in Greek. You will be just fine in Nicosia :)
