POMOS (JAZZ) FESTIVAL

Postby Great White » Tue Sep 05, 2006 5:23 pm

The traditional Pomos Jazz Festival will take place next week-end at Paradise Restaurant. Beautiful setting and great atmosphere. Lots of different age categories. Don't know about the exact programme this year but there's gonna be some bluesy stuff on Saturday night with Phil, a guy who used to live in Limassol, playing with his old koumbare Iorgos on drums and Ireneos on bass. Limassolians are very familiar with them.
They gonna play a warm-up gig at Jazzy B in Limassol on Thursday.

This festival is very nice. If you wanna have a good time, that's the place to go.

I've been ! It was good. Friday was quite interesting with a band made of two Greek Cypriots and three Turkish Cypriots. Ethnic jazz. Jazzy arrangements of some traditional Cypriot songs. Then a great band from Greece with a brilliant vibist living in NY.

Saturday was really cool with Juba Band from Limassol. Good old blues/rhythm&blues and then a fusion jazz band from Holland. The night ended with a terrific blues set from Juba Band again. Lots of fun !

I did not stay on Sunday evening. Don't miss it next year ! It's really a fun weekend and the area in gorgeous.

I went. It was the most disorganized and amateurish thing I have ever seen. I have been to infant school Christmas plays that were better organized.

OK it was a jazz 'festival' and supposed to be laid back but this was a joke.

We arrived early. It was due to start at 8 o'clock. The vibraphone and entourage started a sound check at about 8:15. At about 8:45 they decided they needed a change of drums!!

It was £12 per ticket for the evening. These people are supposed to be professionals and you would expect them to get there early and get set up well before the show was due to start. There were no announcements to say what was happening. The attitude was simply 'Hey man it's a Jazz festival these things happen'. No they do not. You have had a year to get things ready for heavens sake.

Then there were the prices inside the festival.

£1.50 for a small bottle of beer and £10 for a bottle of red wine. Come on give me a break. This is a small obscure location in the north west of Cyprus not downtown New York. Drinks do not cost that much even in the tourist resorts.

Hey Pomos Jazz Festival you are taking people's hard earned money. If you want to be taken seriously as an International event then get your act together!
