Running tracks in Larnaca?

Postby Markos » Tue Sep 05, 2006 2:07 am

Hi. Can someone tell me please if there are any
Olympic-sized running tracks in the Larnaca area
which are open to the general public. By "Olympic-sized"
I mean any track that has a 400m length perimeter.
I would prefer a track that is open in the early morning
or late at night, as I like to train in private and when it's cooler.
(A track open 24/7 would be even better.)

Also, I like to do some hill running now and again.
What are the hilly areas (with quiet roads) around Larnaca?

The American Academy has a 400m running track next to their sports hall. There is no lighting at night though. It is a black gravel track. The track next to the Larnaca Theatre although not wide is another good choice. Its the one with the gym.

If you are looking for hill work, try the Rizolia Forest in Aradippou. The entrance is next to the new Aradippou police station and there are nature trails set out which you could easily run along. Lots of hills, nice scenery and no worries about cars etc. Failing that a run around the Salt Lake (again a nature walk) is supposed to be quite beautiful.

Hi Twinke,
The Rizolia forest sounds really nice. Where is the location of Aradippou police station and roughly how long would it take to walk to the Aradippou police station from Kamares Aqueduct? Is the entrance to the forest off the Limassol Road? I'll be in Larnaca on Thursday so will look out for it.
Many thanks,
Jane

I can shine a torch for you from my veranda if you want some light when you go running :D

Thanks! :D I'll check them both out when I'm over there.
It doesn't matter if there is no lighting. In fact, I prefer it
that way - more privacy.

Sounds good, I like to do a bit of trail running.

Nowadays, I don't do as much running as I used to
because I love the weights so much. Until about 3 years
ago (for about 10 years), I used to run half-marathons
and, when feeling very fit, I would do the odd 20-miler.
Unfortunately, though, my weight would drop down to
10 and 3/4 stone, and my weight-training strength would
also drop. It's the price you have to pay for being a good
long distance runner.

It will take a good 40 minutes to walk from the Aqueduct. The entrance is off the Larnaca Nicosia road just before the roundabout (near those awful wedding halls...) You'd be better off taking the trail around the Salt Lake which borders Kamares.

Happy hiking :)
