Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (Cyta) has said its marketing agreement with Vodafone forbids the UK-owned mobile group from operating in Cyprus’ Turkish occupied areas. Vodafone recently bought Turkish operator Telsim, which has an affiliated company in the northern occupied part of Cyprus, and also has a trade agreement with Cyta, signed in 2004, under which the mobile arm of the Cypriot telco offers services branded as Cytamobile-Vodafone. A Cyta press release said that Vodafone does not intend to operate in the northern territory under its own trade name. It also noted that Vodafone itself does not operate in the southern government controlled areas, and does not participate in the development and operation of Cyta’s mobile network.
Should international companies be allowed in the occupied areas?
