Wireless ISP (WiMAX, WiFi)

Postby Strahd » Mon Sep 04, 2006 11:22 am

Recently a couple of companies have been interested in launching wireless ISP using WiMax technologies. This will allow wireless internet provision of up to 5MBps and to distance of up to 5miles from base station, no line of sight required.

Finally!!!!

The cost will probably be less or equal to having an crappy CYTA or Primetel ADSL connection!

Hi Strahd

Do you know in what areas they're looking to offer a service?

of up to 5MBps

This "up to" part is tricky. Primetel can offer up to 24Mbits in theory. The question is how much will be the real speed and how much it will cost. Is this WiMAX reliable? Can it work well inside buildings, basements etc?

WiMAX is a very new technology and is not mobile access like e.g. 3G.

It is to provide broadband at home/business and interconnect wirelessly without the need of a DSL/leased line and is up to 5MBps per subscriber not shared as DSL is. It uses a modulation technology that does not require line of sight which makes it very easy to implement and very very reliable.

When I get more details I will let you know..

There has been some WiMax Suppliers in Copenhagen for a couple of years and it works fine. But of course if you live in a fortified bunker you might have some trouble to get a clear signal :)

If their signal is so strong isn't it dangerous like GSM?

Who told you GSM is dangerous??????? Perdikis? I guess he does not have a mobile phone...

No neither WiMAX/WiFi nor GSM, 3G or your wireless phone at home are dangerous... their signal levels are about 100 to 1000 times less than the EU/WHO limits for electromagnetic radiation. These limits are already a lot lower than those that could be considered harmful even though this has not been proven scientifically!!!!

It is not strength that makes it so usable without line of sight is the modulation scheme that allows the reconstruction of the signal on the receiver from the reflections even if they defer in phase.

802.16e allows for mobility and some of the major manufacturers are working on this now and will release very soon.

This is an interesting thread for me as I manage a team supporting IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) in the UK which will provide all of the standard telecom facilities (voice, voicemail, conferencing, video etc) over a WiMAX, GPRS/3G or Satellite bearer.

I'm really keen to migrate to Cyprus (lovely place and fantasic people) and hope that operators start to deploy IMS so that I can make the move.

Patiently waiting for more information :)

Cheers,
Mark

Agreed, GSM is not dangerous if used sensibly. The handsets vary power based on the distance from the base station (ie., based on Rx power levels). 3G even less so as it is based on CDMA technology (where the signal can still be received beneath the ambient noise floor) - although this is rarely the case in current networks.

Check the SAR levels of phones before you buy though as they do tend to very wildly.

Cheers,
Mark
