Cyprus Literature

Postby Thea » Sun Sep 03, 2006 9:45 am

I'm looking for Cyprus literature - old and modern. Could someone give me names of Cyprus authors? No problem to find Greek literature as well German and English translations from it. But it is really difficult to find something about the Cyprus litarture scene. Hope to get some interesting ideas. Thanks.

you mean gc authors translated ? or something in the gc dialect ?

i am not familiar about sth cypriot being translated. speaking always about novels.
unless you are interested about history and politics, there are a number of books in english especially about the cyppro. a novel(ish) kind of book but still connected to the cyppro, is from yiannis papadakis : echoes across from the dead zone.
very interesting and easy read.

if you can read greek ,and you are interested to read sth in the gc dialect: vasilis michailidis, and kostas montis are two that spring to mind, but these are rather poets than authors.
even though some of the famous poems of vasilis michailidis are stories.

i believe you can find traditional stories and fairy tailes in the cypriot dialect but i am not familiar of any cypriot author today writing sth in his own dialect.

Thanks for your help!!!
I'll try to find some translations - and later - much later I'll read the original because I just started learning Greek.
Hope to find more informations - in two weeks I'll go to Cyprus again.

I'm shure there is a literature scene in Cyprus. And people who write and read books.

i just was in a small bookshop in limassol were they sell some english books and made a small check.
as i said, most books about cyprus in english, are historic.
there was one or two books, with cypriot fairy tailes or "cypriot traditional stories" in english , but not really a translation of gc authors.
nicosia has a couple of biggest bookshops perhaps you get something more there.

if you just started with greek, i believe that it would be difficult to read something in the gc dialect in the near future...

saw your location germany - do you know Cypriots around Cologne who can teach me Greek. Or does anyone else know Cypriots around Cologne? After finishing my course i'd like to improve greek with private lessons.

And by the way - how can I write Greek with my computer?

Assuming you are using windows XP: Click START then click on CONTROL PANEL then click on the REGIONAL AND LANGUAGE OPTIONS icon, then select the LANGUAGES tab, click on the DETAILS button, where is says "installed devices" click the ADD button, select Greek as "input Language" and Greek (220) as "Keyboard Layout". Click OK on all windows and you are done :D

Hi Sotos,
thanks for the tip. I use XP and I'll try it after my three weeks holiday in cyprus. I'll come to cyprus today to have a lazy time on the beach and find out something more about the cyprus literature scene.
