British if you don't like Cyprus, go home

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby andri_cy » Sat Sep 02, 2006 10:09 pm

Gman of course you have the right to complain. But if all you have to say about Cyprus is bad (in comparison to having a complaint here and there) then apparently you arent happy and you need to rethink your strategy. Again when I say you I dont mean you in particular but in a general matter.

G.Man - I don't think the standard of driving in Cyprus is any worse than in the UK. Different maybe, but certainly no worse!

I assure you it is infinately worse...

I am an advanced driver, my father is an advanced instructor and driving standards here are appalling...

Not be everyone I hasten to ad, but lets list the majority...

One arm on the wheel, one out the window which leads to...

1. No indication, pulling put on dual lane road and wandering half arsed accros the road slowly so as to block the road..

2. Incomplete control of the vehicle

Mobile phone useage... common in the UK as well, but nowhere near what it is here

Box junction is just a pretty set of road markings

Traffic lights are optional to obey

Pick any lane and shove in to the correct one at the last minute

Traffic queue, whats that, I can just overtake it and shove in

Solid white line, I can overtake there and ignore the oncoming traffic...

Ah there is a car coming, but I can pull out anyway, and then slam my brakes on to take the next turning, that other car will stop, even if it is in clouds of tyre smoke...

The speed limit is 100, but no matter if I only drive at 50, the cars behind me can just overtake... well they could if the cars in the outside lane werent nose to tail...

This is not something you see occasionally, this is EVERY single day...

One of my best friends here is a Nicosia traffic policeman, he says the cars have got better, the roads have got better, the driving has got worse...

Anyway, whinge over, as long as you are aware of it and treat everyone else like a major moron you will be fine...

G.Man , I'm with you on the Cypriot drivers being bloody awful , always in a hurry , they think their huge exhaust is an imperative fashion statement , they cant wait to jump the lights and they have no road sense.
The statistics for road deaths are atrocious , most if not all are due to careless driving at high speeds.
I have a niece in Cyprus who recently passed her test and on the same day she paid a visit to someones rear bumper , her excuse , " He stopped suddenly ".All drivers follow far too close totally oblivious of the fact that in an emergency they dont have a chance in hell of stopping before crushing on to the car in front.

As far as the authorities charging you £600.00 duty on your car , if indeed is for duty , dont take on the chin you take them on , I did two years and won , so dont just take what they say as legally correct. You can search for the relevant authorities on the net and file a complain immediately with a copy to the European Authorities responsible for administration procedures regarding importation of vehicles from one EU country to another.

You claim that this is true for the majority of drivers? Only some teens on bikes can often do that. Most of your points are valid only for a minority of drivers and many are valid for a very small minority. Cyprus driving discipline is not great but you don't have to exaggerate like that!

I must say that in the UK standards of driving in my opinion are falling. We have the middle lane roads hogs on motorways who are actually frightened to change lanes so they stay there for the entire journey at 60 mph when the inside lane is empty. They are usually (but not always) girlies or old farts who are even older than me. Drivers don't seem to use their indicators when manouvering and apparantly according to a report on 5 Live last week a significant number of drivers are not wearing seat belts any more. One listener contacted the BBC and said the number of people driving past his/her bus stop in the morning without a belt was something like 20- 30%. I would say that there is a higher proportion of bad drivers in Cyprus but the UK is catching up.

Just in case you are not familiar with the meaning of 1.8 million , that is the population of Cyprus twice , just thought I make it simple for you moron (baby in Greek )

So we cypriots have to suck up to the BRITISH because they keep are island afloat. We must not say a bad word about the BRITISH or we are doomed. I think we have plenty of tourists from other countries who dont take the piss out of cyprus & the cypriots.
