Turkey in the EU? At this rate, dream on.....

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Turkey in the EU? At this rate, dream on.....

Postby Simon » Wed Aug 30, 2006 5:04 pm
Cypriot Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis said that the Greek Cypriot side`s position from the commencement of the process which began with the July 8 agreement is that which is expressed in yesterday`s statement by the President of the UN Security Council, calling for the full implementation of the agreement without further delay.

Pashiardis noted that ``our side with consistency, responsibility, goodwill and above all political will is working towards achieving progress as a necessary prerequisite for the commencement of substantive negotiations on the Cyprus problem,`` adding that the preparation of the ground before substantive negotiations is also a demand of the UN Secretary General, who ``first wants to be convinced that the ground has been sufficiently prepared before he becomes involved personally in a new effort.``

Referring to the statement by the President of the Security Council, after being briefed by UN Undersecretary General for Political Affairs Ibrahim Gambari, that the Security Council calls for the full implementation of the July 8 agreement without further delay, Pashiardis said ``this is exactly our side`s position from the beginning of the process and we stand by it.``

Asked if the government was concerned that the Security Council was maintaining strict neutrality despite the Turkish side`s stance which is preventing the implementation of the agreement, Pashiardis said ``it was of course not expected that the Security Council would apportion responsibility for the delay in the promotion of the full implementation of the July 8 agreement, even if there are some responsibilities for this delay.``

Pashiardis said the Greek Cypriot side has no reason to obstruct progress but has every reason to pursue substantive negotiations for a Cyprus settlement.

Asked if the Security Council could force the Turkish side to stop delaying work at the technical committees, Pashiardis said there was no way of doing this, adding that it was up to the Turkish side to respond to the Security Council call for the full implementation of the agreement.
It seems that once again, it is Turkey that is holding up the negotiations. Put this together with their failure to implement the EU Protocol (i.e. opening ports to Cypriot traffic) and you have a recipe for disaster in October when the EU issues its Report.

Good luck in getting in the EU!

Our side says the committees have not yet even been formed!!! The reason is they say, your side want to form committees that will discuss the Anan plan!!!

I don’t doubt that our side is telling at least part of the truth. So what is your side saying. Why the commitees have not yet been formed??

NB. So Denktash spent 32 years wanting partition. Will we now have Talat spending us another 32 years wanting Annan disguised partition???

Surely name it what you will the Annan plan plays a vital role as it is the basis for any new negotiations. Why redo everything that we have already agreed? we shoudl concentrate on what we do not agree on and not go over covered ground which would be a waste of everyone time.

Bet on Turkey joining EU. It appears Mr Blair is pushing for Turkey to join but it also appears his days are becoming increasingly numbered. On the Annan plan i thought there was total dissagreement ?

I agree Turkey wont get in but have you taken that into the equation when considering the negative impact it will have on the Cyprus issue? A disinterested Turkey is not in the GCs favor I can assure you.

There are Areas that have been agreein principle but meed to be slightly chnaged eg timetable or gurantees of implimentation. It was not all black as it was put before you.

Where does that leave the Cyprus issue? many GCs do not realize that it will leave the south up the river without a paddle. Their blindness in seeking revenge against Turkey will ensure they cut off their nose despite their face.
