Boycott the Occupied Areas?

JOURNALISTS - TURKISH OCCUPIED AREAS - BOYCOTT

Greek Cypriot media decided that as of today and for the next two weeks no journalist or cameraman will cross to the Turkish occupied areas of the island to cover any activity or event concerning the occupation regime, after a spate of illegal arrests of Greek Cypriot reporters in the pseudostate in recent weeks.

A meeting of representatives of the Union of Cyprus Journalists UCJ), of the newspapers and magazines publishers union, the cameramen trade union, trade unions of Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation employees and TV channels also decided to demand that the UN, the European Union and international and European organisations, safeguarding the freedom of the press and the individual rights, act decisively for the termination of the arbitrary stance of the occupation regime and the effective protection of the journalists` mission, work and rights.

This demand will be conveyed to the UN Secretary-General`s Special Representative to Cyprus, to the Head of the European Commission Representation to Cyprus and to the Ambassadors of the UN Security Council permanent member states in Nicosia.

What do you think about the boycott? Maybe all Greek Cypriots should do that?

What purpose will this boycott serve?

It's symbolic. It's taken seriously when journalists are arrested because it's against freedom of speech. Especially when the detentions are by the military (of any country). The ECHR issued a ruling against Turkey for just that very behaviour towards Turkish journalists this year.

I understand the journalists' point of view. I was asking what the purpose of a general boycott by all the GCs would be.

I don't support a general boycott, and wouldn't see the point.

The communities are supposed to be generating goodwill and learning to live with each other, so I do support the borders being opened and a free flow of traffic.

I don't support military intimidation of journalists, however. They could have been told to leave or banned from re-entering if they really were filming in a military zone. This heavy handedness is unnecessary.

A boycott serves many purposes, of which I will just mention one, as it is topical; it shows that we stand with the journalists who are being treated in a deplorable manner.

I have boycotted the puppet regime ever since the border opened, and I will continue to do so, out of principle more than anything else. I refuse to show my passport to gain access to a part of my country. Doing this would make me feel as if I am submitting to the occupying forces.

Not to mention the fact that I might get arrested, considering the puppet regime are arresting any GC they feel like nowadays. Heard about the swimmer that got arrested, (or should I say abducted?) Pathetic!
