Our housekeeper takes 5 pounds to wash a car only on the outside for 30 minutes. 2.5 could be ok for 7-8 hours work. But for 2 ... it wouldn't even cover the transportation cost!

im suprised u all have housekeepers
that was one thing that amused me so much in Cyprus
how most working families had cleaners or live in help..........most of the time the mother in law/mothers would cook and help out with their kids so its not like they had that to think of as well
...maybe we just make it tough for ourselves over here LOL........My hubby and i both earn really good money but I would never consider getting a cleaner........

TRUSTWORTHY??!!
..... Yes she probably will be trustworthy to start off with but if you expect her to scratch out an existence on £2.50 how long do you think she's going to remain that way.
So you were exploited when you first came here and you now feel that gives you all the right in the world to now exploit the next person.... so pathetic.
I wonder what you expect she'll buy with that £2.50.... perhaps a carton of toilet paper.

Part of the culture of low wages comes from the employment of foreign nationals as housemaids for £150 plus their accommodation and food. Having been to Sri Lanka earlier this year, even these wages are very good by the standards there.

For many people from Russian and the ex-USSR nations, such low wages are better than they can get at home too.

Why would a house cleaner would need to speak English at all, unless you also want her/him to be a Nanny to your kids, or answer the phone, or be able to read your shopping list, to do your shopping for you. Are you sure you're not looking for House Keeper for lousy £2.50 an hour at the hours you choose for them to be there. Are you looking to raise your "social status" by having a maid or what. ??

The day me and my husband earn good wages will be the day we can afford to pay good wages! And I will say again..... it is between 2-4 hours per day, so to work the full 8 hours would get paid £20! A days work for £20 is more than what I have ever earned here!!!

Like I said, unless you are going to apply for the position then don't you have better things to do with your time, seeing it is so precious!

Thank you Lana - following on from what you said, in England I was earning over £30,000 per year now I am lucky to earn £20 per day, so it is the opposite for us.

You would be better off to work only 2 months in the UK, and live the other 10 months in Cyprus and not work. This way, you can pay yourself £2.50 per hour, to do your own cleaning.!!
