My husband worked in many restaurants in the tourist area of limassol and it was not just for Cypriot owners but English too. He generally took home £100 per week for 6 days. I have worked in various jobs and been for many interviews all offering no more than £400 per month, mostly less. I now have an ongoing temp job and can't keep up with the household chores and think offering £2.50 is higher than the normal rate plus is all we can afford right now, as I am sure you now understand. Where do you live?

Forgive me for taking this off topic, but I am shocked at these low wages; I pay my administrative staff between £600-850 per month net (+13 month etc). Maybe I ma too generous :-)

Lana - Shame I didn't know you before!! Where are you?

I went for a job 2 years ago as a legal Secretary but they also wanted me to be the Office Manager and would only offer me £350 per month! I went for a job in a travel agents last year, they wanted me to work 24 hours per week for £150 per month!!

I promise you there are many people out there struggling who would appreciate earning £2.50 an hour as a cleaner - like I said until I got this job now I would have jumped at the job we are offering.

JUNE , go to NICOSIA on a sunday, you will find plenty of ASIANS milling about who are looking 2 be exploited for work.
Is the £2.50 PER HOUR before or after tax ?

We are not looking to exploit! Because it is only for a few hours per week tax does not have to be paid!

What is on offer here is very very low due to the number (2-4) of hours offered.

For casual work the rate is 3-5 pounds ph for a cleaner.

Obviously if you work 40 hours a week the rate is different.

Simon wrote:I am not criticising, I would just find it amusing. I have indeed lived in Cyprus and worked, nobody has ever offered me such low wages, and I was only 16 at the time. I am sorry that you have struggled, but with such jobs, you should have been earning more. Where was you working, to be earning just £2 an hour!

Good luck in finding somebody.

I agree with Simon.

The rate offered in this instance is well below expectation.

Far too low for 2-4 work

Perhaps 3-5 pounds ph

junemichael wrote:No offence, but you obviously have not had to struggle here in Cyprus like most of us. Like we mentioned for the last 5 years when we have managed to get jobs we can only earn £2 per hour and I am a legal Secretary and my husband is a Chef!! So please don't criticise what you don't understand.

june, please give me your e-mail address so i may contact you. I know of a lady that would be willing to work for you for 2.50 an hour. She works for my mum occasionally, and is very clean. She's from Russia, so I'm not sure if she speaks English, but I could find out for you.
