OCCUPATION REGIME ARRESTING PEOPLE

Two Greek Cypriot journalists, arrested on Friday by the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime in occupied Cyprus, have been remanded in custody until Monday, in connection with alleged charges of filming a military zone, a move that has sparked off severe criticism from the Cyprus Union of Journalists, Turkish Cypriot media and political parties.

On Friday Sigma TV reporter Adonis Pallikarides and cameraman Nikitas Dalitis crossed to the occupied part of Nicosia to talk to Ali Erel, former head of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce, and Turkish Cypriot businessmen, who object to the regimes policy not to demolish a bridge in occupied Nicosia that would facilitate trade between the islands Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. Cypriot Union of Journalists (CJU), Greek Cypriot parties, as well as Turkish Cypriot media have condemned the detention of members of the press.

``This is a dreadful escalation of the continuing arbitrariness by the Turkish occupation forces,`` says a CJU press release, calling on the United Nations and the Cypriot government to act more decisively and drastically to force the regime free the two journalists. The CJU has called for an urgent meeting of media representatives to coordinate measures against ``this condemnable situation.``

Justice and Public Order Minister Sofoklis Sofokleous described today the behaviour of the occupation regime as provocative, unacceptable and immoral, saying that his ministry and the ministry of foreign affairs have undertaken an initiative not only to free the journalists but also to protest strongly their illegal arrest.

Hey, turkey is a democratic junta...they shall be happy, in turkey they just kill them or they are sending them to jail with accusations of insulting kemal 'alcoholic' attaturk or the turkish state.

economist did a review for kemal, he was a misgynist..just like regular muslims and he was drinking a lot.

European666 , it is to our interests that in order to bring about a unification of our island , we must negotiate with Turkey since there is no alternative. Bearing in mind that just as the G/Cs see Turkey as an occupying force , so do the T/Cs see Turkey as a liberating force.
Kemal Ataturk was with out a doubt the person that pushed Turkey into the 21st century and he is revered by the entire Turkish nation , including the T/Cs. Offensive remarks will do nothing to help the process of a peaceful solution.

Miltiades,

Did you notice that not even one TC steps in to comment whatever fascist practices their regime applies?
If this were happening in our side you would see everybody accusing us, GCs trying to explain, pinky GCs like Bananiot extending the line to the past of Hn Papadopoulos etc etc.
Why do they refuse to comment on something so obviously wrong on their side?

Do you know the regime now invented a new method to arrest people? Well hear this:As soon as one enters the occupied they tell him he has to pay a fine upto 80 pounds because the previous time he entered he supposely violated the speed limit!!! When and where only God knows!!!

Here we are not talking for people who think this way but for people who think the other way and do go to the occupied. So how do you think they should behave? Like good tourists?

Pyrpolizer, not knowing the exact circumstances Its difficult to say if the arrests are justified or not.

My honest opinion is that both sides are being stupid and unreasonable on matters of arrests. I was not happy with the arrest of the swimmer or the recent arrests of the journalists.

Having said this I was equally annoyed at the arrest of the Turkish architect. Both sides are playing tit for tat, totally unnecessary and stupid. Nobody but the innocent public is suffering because of our politicians stupidity and ego.
