As TRNC is not recognised by any country of the world, then surely Talat is just any old individual presenting a trophy...

Cant be a political statement if the politicians are not recognisd by anyone

It's recognised by Turkey.

Not that that makes it a legal state, but Talat was in Turkey at the time. He wasn't in, say, Italy.

Issy1956 , I think the point that Marz was trying to make is that it is time that you put to rest the ghost of "G/Cs out on a killing spree . In the year 2006 , some 32 years after the invasion , many things have to be re examined by both communities the most important of all is that the entire G/C or for that matter the entire T/C , went of their way to wipe each other out. Appraisals of the past horrific events perpetrated by both extreme elements of the communities are not constructive in bringing about a solution. Realization instead that we , as Cypriots , need to safeguard our islands independence and identity for future generations to come, is a process we must focus upon , rather than who committed more atrocities . The fact of the matter is that the huge majority of your compatriots see the Turkish troops as none other than a force of occupation , they also see the "TRNC" as nothing more than a puppet manipulated by its creator Turkey. Recognition was indeed a prospect that , after the resounding rejection of the AP , might have been seen to be on the cards. However the International community has resisted pressure by Turkey to abandon fundamental principles so essential in wold affairs . Cyprus is a European member , the demographics somewhat different now than in 1974, the British community is approaching the size that the T/C once were , I say once were since a very large percentage of Cypriot Turks have emigrated .
In all Lysi 1956 , we the Cypriots that lived and interacted with each other in the past are opening our hearts to you , our compatriots and are shouting from the top of our heads that this land is ours , yours , together we must come , together we shall overcome and seek a peaceful and a just solution to our islands ' problem.
If you Lysi stretch out and embrace Cyprus , Cyprus will embrace you .

FIA's protocol says that the trophy must be given from an official of the state that holds the games. Can you get it?

The only substantive reason I can think of why they would have done this is because they intend to show that the TRNC and Turkey are one state. But I haven't heard any news to this effect (ie. offcially joining with Turkey and not remaining a separate entity). Last I heard they had an offcial economic union.

Anybody else heard anything along these lines?

The impact of this move will be obvious whenever turkey will apply for any major sport event like olympic games or a football tournament. this is going to be a bad case study. dont understimate the cypriot and greek presence on various committeees.

It'll be interesting to see how it pans out. I guess it will come down to the FIA's findings.
