Question about broadband internet connection

Postby HeD » Wed Aug 23, 2006 8:35 pm

Sorry this question is not about nationalism, politics, religion, poetry or anything remotely contentious (I hope).

Can anyone advise on how to connect a Netgear router to a broadband connection supplied by Cytanet and Netrunner?

I am trying to avoid using the bridge modem supplied by Cytanet as the most useful functionality has been disabled. (Wireless and router functions).

I know that the B-FOCuS modem can be modified but I do not want to do that if it can be avoided.

Thanks.

You can not connect the router directly to the line. You need a modem between them. You take a cat-5 ethernet cable and connect one end to one of the ports of the b-focus and the other end on the WAN port of the router. Then you take another cat-5 and you connect the ethernet card of your computer with one of the free LAN ports on the router.

Hi Sotos, Perhaps I should have been more explicit. The Netgear router is an ADSL modem / wireless router / 4 x LAN ports.

Thanks.

Hi HeD,

I've got the 'old' style ADSL modem from CYTA. I bought myself a Linksys wireless router and plugged it into one of the ports on the back of the modem.

This works fine - both my wife and I have wireless cards in our laptops.

I don't know whether this will work on the later style modems.

Cheers,
