I cannot stand hip-hop, rap, house, dance music, boys band and the teen US rock/pop (Lohan, Sprears and the like of talentless losers).

I think the state of music is extremely sad at the moment. There are no real musicians left with only a very few exceptions. I am a huge music fan/collector and I listen to everything except the above genres (which to me are "no" music). I have the very sad feeling that music has reached an end and that nothing creatively new is invented. OK rap is "new"... but it's basically no music, only beats/rhythms with lyrics.... And Aerosmith had already a rap song/section back in 1977...

Even the genres that I like have problems coming up with something exciting... and believe me I follow what is happening every day. I am not only an old fart living in the past !

At the moment, I am into....

My friend David Garfield (George Benson, Cher, Luther Vandross, etc.) and Alex Ligertwood (Santana) - "Giving Back" (songs : "For The Love Of You", "Zuke" and "Two Bunch Samba" in particular)
David Garfield - "Seasons of Change" - beautiful latin jazz recording featuring Luis Conte (percussion - Phil Collins, Madonna, etc.) and Abe Laboriel Sr. (bass - Pointers Sisters, Larry Carlton, Curtis Stigers, Stan Getz, etc.)
Steve Ferrone - "It Up" - drummer for Tom Petty and Eric Clapton ("Unplugged) amongst many others - superb contemporary jazz/funk live album. Check out the wonderful ballad/classic "Everything Must Change".
Thunder - Live (particularly the song "Low Life In High Places", "Empty City" and "An Englishman On Holiday")
Vanden Plas - "Spirit Of Live" - this is a fantastic prog metal band from Germany - for fans of Dream Theater
Sade - "Promise" - "Jezebel" is one of my all time favourite song. This album is pure brilliance.
Lenny McDaniel - "Faith Is In The Heart" - check out "Overwhelmed", great song. Singer/songwriter from New Orleans. One of the most amazing voice ever. Mix of Dylan, Springsteen and Crosby/Stills/Nash/Young with a strong blues touch.
Jimmy Barnes - "Flesh And Wood" - his voice might not be for everybody but this is one of the most honest and sincere collection of accoustic songs I have ever heard ("Flame Trees" is outstanding).
Eva Cassidy - "Songbird" - her voice was crystal pure. Listen to the cover of Sting's "Fields Of Gold". Eva died from cancer about 10 years ago. She was 36.

Happy listening !

Tara T... John Hiatt... great choice ! Have seen him live about 10 years ago in Zurich... It was closer to a punk rock concert that what I thought it would be ! Great songwriter.

I don't mind metal. I don't like thrash/speed/death metal but I really dig Motorhead. I am interested in some thrash lyrics strongly criticizing church and religion when written intelligently (am not baptized and 10000% Atheist, don't believe in God or any Higher Power).

I like Prog Metal (Dream Theater, Vanden Plas, etc.). I really love hard rock mainly when it's blues influenced (Whitesnake, Cinderalla, Great White, AC/DC, Thunder, Paul Shortino, Free, Bad Co., etc.).

GW - Ah - but did you hear about Paris Hilton's upcoming album? I never thought anyone could ever remove the flavor from "plain vanilla." Stunningly, I may be proven very wrong. She and Coldplay should join forces - call it the "What's Playing on Hell's PA System Tour."

I think there's a lot of good stuff out there. At least stateside, you really have to look for it. Tinariwen, Afro Celt Sound System, etc, etc. Robert Plant's newest album is very good - and very different. (If you have a sense of humor about these things, he's dedicated 'Freedom Fries' "...to a piece of sh!t, named Blair" a couple of times.) I think Sing-Sing is quite good, as is Wolfmother.

Interesting you'd mention Dream Theater. A friend of mine took lessons from their keyboard player back in high school (about 16 years ago). Otherwise, thanks for your selection - couple of names I haven't seen before.

Rgds,
