It's very simple. Absolute power corrupts, so for the benefit of the whole country, it is better to have checks and balances from both communities. Under normal conditions and situation, it could operate like any other Democratic country. The problem is, we have not earned each others trust yet, due to our very recent history together.

Kikapu,

Say our country had 100 people. If we didn't have minority/majority within them we would have just 100 equal people and nothing more. Each of those has 1/100th of power.

Now if we divided this people, one a group of 88 people, and another group of 18% people, tell me how the power within the two groups should be shared in order to maintain the equality among the people.

Minority/majority etc are just labels. If you don't want to be named minority, absolutely no problem. But you can not demand that your 18% should have 50% power, because this is a racist discrimination against us, you take way more than your fair share on our expense and it creates something undemocratic.

Otherwise why not the Armenians of Cyprus to come up and say that they want 50% power as well, and the Maronites, and the Latins etc?

I would be happy with the "power sharing" proposals made by Kifeas. The TC's does not need to have 50% power . They can be the 20% in the House of 80% GC's. As long as, the TC's can have their input into decision making, according to their %, which is your argument, that they should not get more than their share. I would have proposed a 50%-50% House, with a 60% requiring for any passage of legistlation. What Kifeas proposed is different than what I would have liked, but the results are the same, if not better than mine, so as a compromise, I would go along with his proposal, so one one can "cry foul", that it is not Democratic.

Piratis, do you support Kifeas's "Power sharing" proposals or not, or do you only want the 80% to have total control, because of their numbers.??

Piratis, you better agree with what I have proposed, because I know where you live and I will come to your house and start beating you up until I make you agree.

Well, this can be another method of having people agree with others point of view. Since I agree with your proposal Kifeas, spear no mercy on Piratis, or anyone else for that matter.!

First of all I have never said that GCs should have "total control". What I always advocate is equality of citizens (this means TCs + GCs together) PLUS veto and blocking rights to TCs on important issues that will be defined before the solution. PLUS guaranteed proportional representation of TCs in the government, parliament etc, PLUS Turkish as official language and both religions to be treated in the exact same way by the state, PLUS I even said that I wouldn't have a problem if it is required by law that 1 every 5 presidents to be a TC (and I would even accept to start with a TC).
Therefore where did you see me asking for "total control" by GCs??? What I am always tolking about is for a fair power sharing, nothing more and nothing less.

About Kifeas proposal, I hope you are talking about this:

I had to search for kifeas posts one by one and go back 2 weeks to find it. It would be better if you had given me a link before asking for my opinion ;)

As a compromise I would accept that kind of power sharing. Problem is that once we make one compromise the TC side comes along asking for more and more. This is how Denctash had dragged Vasiliou and Cleredes into the totally unacceptable Annan plan.

So you should be asking TCs (e.g. Viewpoint) if he accepts that proposal.

   Come on Kifeas, we have already established that your humor is lacking. Better let Bg_Turk to make the jokes ;)

I did state that on face value it would appear acceptable

I hereby withdraw my proposal and I ask all of you to consider it as a non-paper and void, because for Viewpoint to agree with it there must be something inherently wrong with it that I haven't seen before.

Yes, that is the correct proposal. I'm sorry for not giving you the link. Actually, I don't know how to transfer it from one thread top the other. In anycase, I run the proposal all of last week, looking for anyone who would disagree with it, and no one did, including Viewpoint. So you see, we can agree on things that will produce the same results, even if we disagree on the methods. So lets find out what we all want, then look for methods that is agreeable to most.

I did not mean to sound that you would be against this proposal. It's only that, when ever you talk about "majority rule", it seems to apply that the 80% will have decision making power, while the 20% will only get "minority rights".

So, do you support Kifeas's "power sharing" proposal.?
