On this enosis thing, the Cyprus today isn't the Cyprus of 100 years ago. Cyrpus, as a country had never been 'independant', even in Ancient times, when it was split in to City states, each having connections of their own, for eg, I believe that the City state of Salamis was closely connected to Athens. Now as I have said before, I can understand why people wanted enosis, and I do not believe that it was for 'sinister' reasons like some people believe. Again Cyprus had never been independant, Modern Greece was 'getting rid' of the Ottomans and slowly each province and Island joined (over many years) or were ceded, some by Great Britian (the one's that weren't so strategicaly important) to Greece. The call for enosis completely coincided with emergence of Modern Greece. In fact, on quite a few occasions the British 'flirted' with the idea of enosis....I do not beleive that the GC's wanted inosis because they wanted an ethnically Greek only state, enosis would have joined all Cypriots to Greece...evidently something that the Turkish Cypriots did not want, something that I can completely understand..Now I can't speak for all Cypriots their probably were a few GC chauvanistic facists who did want an ethnically Greek state, but that is not what the majority wanted...plus doesn't every country have these narrow minded 'idiots'? And also, Cyprus wasn't the only Island, region, that had (an Important) ethnic Turkish minority. Yet these places still became modern Greece. I know I'm making it sound like I want enosis, but I don't, I really don't, and neither do any other GC's I know, so I think that if the GC's were aloud to choose between enosis and an independant state, they would choose an independant state, a state that they are very protective over. After the people were granted independance, they realised that, yes Cyprus could be independant, they could hold on to their Cypriot identity as well as their Greek identity (For example, the regional dialects of Greece aren't really spoken by the young anymore, however the regional dialect of Cyprus is still kept alive), etc. For most GC's, Cyprus isn't just a country with ethnic Greeks in it, it is a country made up of many cultures and traditions, if anybody attempts to say that the Turkish culture did not influence the GC and Greek culture, then they are living in a dream world, and the other way around, the Greek culture also influenced the Turkish culture. I think that people should look back at the History of Cyprus with a more open mind, and try and truly understand what happened, instead of the classic (and may I add) wrong view that "Oh well evidently GC's and TC's just can't live together"...Both the communities were victims...We need to try and rebuild trust, because there is definately something to build on, history shows us that, and meet somewhere in the middle...Cyprus could be such a Great country if we come together.....We need a fair and just solution for all Cypriots, and I believe (and hope) that one day that will happen, the question is when?? I hope in my lifetime!!
Peace!!
