Ok, Bananiot, let me ask you a question: If some artist had the exact opposite views of yours, and he supported things that you find outrageous and wrong, would you say that he has to be sponsored by the state (= the taxpayers) to produce his work? Are you sure?

Or if the government sponsored such a film you would do exactly the opposite and come here to accuse the government of supporting such kind of films? I am sure you would do the second.

Also I think you are intentionally confusing things. The artist could pay the money out of his own pocket and make anything that he would like. Nobody would interfere. But if you ask for money from somebody based on some agreement, then you have to honor your agreement. If you don't like the agreement then you shouldn't take the money, pay from your own pocket and do anything that you want.

Thus, according to your idea, the government (this one, the past one and the one to come) should read the scripts and endorse all plays produced by the Cyprus Theatre Organisation on account of the fact that CTO is financed by the government. This is a weird notion and of course a despicable one for any democracy. The Ministry of Education and Culture also finances, among others, the self-taught artists. They should start painting according to the directives of some government official, according to the Piratis logic.

Piratis, why are you asking me these questions. Do you think that every person on this island is like you? Did I ever call you names such as traitor or defeatist for your views? You express them and I critisise them. I would never suggest that you should be shut off. Did I ever complain that the state run TV invites certain analysers to its programmes. No I did not. I complain because it totally ignores others, such as Makarios Droushiotis, who have something different to say.

The more I read your last statement the more my hair stands on end. Basically your suggesting that government should employ only those that sing to its tune. It is a totalitarian attitude with which you have become inocculated, it seems, and this is the penalty you are paying my friend, for making wrong friends. I sincerely hope you get over it.

Bananiot, if the government was sponsoring a movie that was against your beliefs, e.g. "The treason by Nainaikides" then would you congratulate the government for promoting the arts, or you would be the first to accuse the government for choosing to sponsor something like that? I BET it would be the second.

What I suggest is that the government should not sponsor any political films etc, unless they promote the interests of our country. Those that want to promote the interests of others can do so with their own money.

Again I will say that I am talking in general and not about this particular film. In this case it might be the government who is wrong. I have not watched the film so I can not judge it.

Apology accepted, but on your first point, the government sponsored the mouth of your President to utter those stupid remarks and you and many others kept quite. Thus, you have no credibility when making judgements on morality issues. I will never dream of silencing anyone, sponsored or not, it makes no difference. Pity you cannot see it this way.

I didn't apologize, I simply re-stated my position on this particular film as I did in my first post in this thread. I didn't watch it and I am not judging the film, and for the same reason I can not judge the government on this issue either. One or the other (or both) might be wrong in this case.

the government sponsored the mouth of your President to utter those stupid remarks and you and many others kept quite

Papadopoulos made the statements just like Anastasiades makes his own "smart" statements all the time. Right or wrong it falls within his freedom of speech. The same freedom of speech that an artist has to make any movie he wants. Thats his right.

Where we disagree is that you claim that the state should throw money left and right without making sure that the money are used in ways that will help our country, while I say that if the government gives our money it has to make sure that these money are used for the benefit of Cyprus.

If something (and again - I am not talking about this particular film) does not benefit Cyprus, or even worst harms it, then the government should not sponsor it but instead save the money and use them for something that will be beneficial for our country. (thats why we pay taxes!)

Thus, according to your logic, its fine for the President of all Cypriots (sic) to accuse 100 thousand people of being paid agents of the enemy? This, according to your logic, is part of his democratic rights? Is it part of his democratic rights to propose that he does not have to prove his allegations but for the people to prove their innocence? Is this how he preserves and struggles for the interests of this country?

In the meantime the patriotic parties of the government coalition are at odds, to say the least, with each other for the spoils of power. They are involved on a daily basis in dog fights over the municipalities elections and the stench of their dirty politics is suffocating those that want to see and smell. The rest, albeit the majority, are happy to look the other way. These are the people who envisage benefits for their support to the coalition, for them and their children and their relatives. Damn them, they have introduced such ethics to our society that have made the average Cypriot a mere clapping idiot and have neutralised him as a citizen to the extend that he will cheer all absurdities of his masters, who throw cramps of bread at him from time to time to keep him zombified.

Those that stand up and swimm against the current are the real heroes of our society. To my mind come a couple of actresses, Popi Avraam and Valentina Sophocleous who suddenly became non persons because they had the audacity to be part of the EDI ticket in the Parliamentary elections. They were even dropped from their daily and very successful sicoms and they are basically without work. Popi Avraam stars in the film "Akamas" which the government decided to stop funding and now, from a top performer, she is a maverick actress.

Would the government sponsor a film , made by artists , exonerating pedophilia or even necrophilia and would the tax payers object to such sponsorship. The subject in question was deemed by the relative authorities as a sensitive issue depicting events that appeared as biased against one site , the makers of the film concentrated on political hot potatoes likely to inflame a vast majority of opinion in Cyprus. Government funding or refusal of it does not mean censorship or sponsorship.

Bananiot, please do not distort the truth. Papadopoulos did not accuse 100 thousand people for their choice in the Annan plan referendum, but only a rather small group of people who in a commemoration event about Famagusta, have gathered themselves around the place and kept shouting slogans against him for sponsoring a "No." He said that even after the people have cast their vote and made their democratic choice, and even after everybody have had time to evaluate the plan thoroughly and better detect it's misguided nature and objectives, there are still people that -like some other "Nenekides," continue to insist that we should have obeyed the calls of the foreigners and have adopt the plan. The comments were specifically directed at some people, and not against all the people that voted in favour of the plan, for what he rightfully saw as a very annoying and meaningless attitude on their part, some 4-5 months after the referendums and after the issue was already settled by the people with their vote.

Miltiades I’m afraid what your examples are ridiculous as the whole issue and the nerve of the supporters of this madness.

The whole issue is not about the opinion of the one side is about the memories of the innocent killed communists memories and it is about the events of 60ies when ex eoka members become criminals like Grivas, Sampson, Giorkajis and Papadopoulos (and almost all the big guys including Makarios).

And this is about the Akel opinion and the memories of the innocent people that killed and it had nothing to do with the TC’s.

They sponsor the 20% of all the Cypriot films (by European foundlings and specific laws) and all the GC had the right to express their politic view and especially a view that express the 30%+ of the GC.

I’ll agree in the position what the founding is not the problem, the actual problem is the censorship and talibanism of this shameless government were lead us to absolute humiliation.

Just look the events and this shameless government actions and then come back to support them if you can. No one reasonable can support this madness.

Just take a look of his actions and try to understand what he wants.

http://www.makarios.ws/cgibin/hweb?-A=1527&-V=index

I bet my balls what he wants partition and what he will manage to do it because everyone (including the TC’s) accept his actions like a god gifts (especially Dektash).

The only power really interested for a solution is USA and some week on the issue Europeans that supports 100% the America efforts (I don’t believe what the British want any solution that it will be the reason for them to loose a big part of their powers on the area and the reason to loose their investments on the north side).

They lead us to the partition with mathematical accuracy and our Dektash become the most ridiculous politician world wide after Ahmadinezant.

There is one person that obviously logs into the forum for some time now under multiple different names and makes posts that are all expressing essentially the same point of view, trying in this way to give the impression that the same views are shared by a much larger and wider spectrum of people. This practice is clearly outside the scope of this forum, and the administrator should check out the log-in and posting IP address and -if they are all from the same IP- to remove the many alternative accounts that essentially belong to the same poster.
