Marriage between Brits and Cypriots

Postby Colinos » Wed Aug 09, 2006 10:48 am

Hi there - long time reader first time poster here and am interested to get some opinions.

I am British, and my fiancee is British although her parents are Greek Cypriot. We are getting marriage next year in a Greek church in the UK. We came back from our annual pilgrimage to her home land over the weekend, having visited several of the family out there and told them the news of the wedding.

So many were reluctant to come to England, and gave her the impression that they did not approve that she was getting married in the UK or even possibly that they didn't approve she was getting married to a Brit (despite them apparently liking me) even though we've now been engaged for 5 years!

What's the opinion, from people in Cyprus, of English Greeks (charlies I believe) and them marrying out of Greekness. Is it still frowned upon slightly? I'd be interested to hear any views.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding was slightly on the light side in my case. When I let my family know about my decision to marry an American my mom was straight up acting like the girl's father in the movie, and it took forever to convince her to even attend a wedding. It took about a year or two and now my mom loves my husband more than me.

Be prepared for drama :)

Just kidding, treat your wife right and her family will end up loving you to bits (and cooking for you to boot!). It's normal for there to be an adjustment period while they get used to the idea.

The film my big fat greek wedding was like a mirror of my life, only obviously very extreme.

Her parents and brother like me a lot, so there are no problems there. It's just the far flung aunties and cousins that come across as having a problem at times.

The good thing is I have learnt to speak Greek and they don't know, so listening in on their conversations was very interesting.

I read recently (Cyprus Mail on Sunday) that 51% of weddings were between Greek men and foreign women so I'd expect them to be grateful to anybody marrying one...

My English mother married my Greek Cypriot father in 1940. I don't think they had any problems but they went mental when his younger brother took up with a German lady afew years after WW11. It was understandable in a way because dad had been in the RAF for 5 years. Eventually they made up and became close friends.

My older brother married an English girl way back in 1963 , still together after 5 children and 4 grandchildren. I got married to a an English girl in 1967 having met my wife in 1963 , or was it the other way around , cant remember , Still together. My younger brother married a G/C girl back in 1978 , still together. So the moral of the story it takes two to tango . Parents would always like their off springs to marry into the race , my daughter married to as G/C , my son to an English girl. Love them all just the same.

my sister is married to an Australian boy, its been 10years now and they have two girls - my family both here in Oz and in Cyprus love him
if u and your fiance are fine then thats what matters!!

we could relate to the big fat greek wedding celebrations
when my BIL first started coming over - he'd ask why is everyone screaming at each other
but we'd say we're just talking

I guess the only issues there would be is religion or traditions that one or the other might like to follow so if u had kids how would u do certain things
