Future of RAF Akrotiri and Dekelia Garisson.

I was just wondering whats going on with this "peaceful occupation".
I've heard that government hired lawyers to look at any chances of getting rent for occupied areas. Apparently there are some loopholes since Cyprus is now in EU? IS there any way these bases could be closed down and land handed over to RoC? I've also heard that Dekelia Garisson was closing down, i guess all these are rumours, does anyone know any solid info on this?

I think that when the annan plan was being discussed the British said something along the lines that if it was accepted then they would give back 45% of the land. A point was made by Mario Matsakis then to the effect that if they could give the land back then why not now?
raymanuva I didnt answer your poll because I couldnt see an option I could vote for .
My opinion is that the land should be returned to Cyprus if they then want to negotiate a new lease (and I know the UK is witholding payments at present) Then they should do what they feel is right.
I'm British and I certainly wouldnt feel less safe if the land was handed back and British troops withdrawn

No, No, No! The French are not moving in but, rumour has it that the Brits may leave and if so then the Russians will come! Why? Simply because they sell all their third rate military equiment to the GC National Guard and will be required to work on the equipment in the hope of getting one piece of it to actually work!

P.S. Can you imagine what would happen to Happy Valley if the Brits left!

Yes what an absolutely fantastic centre for Cyprus national football and athletic squads.

And the married quarters would make brilliant starter homes for young couples who cant get on the housing ladder (a bit like when MOD bases close in the UK.)

They would have ready made communities ..Bars and restaurants en site could be rented out to entrepenural locals and at least the government would get rental income (unlike now)

I could go on forever

Possible, but just think of all the rubbish the GC occupants of the houses looking over the Valley would dump over the side, as a land-fill site the Valley would full in a coulpe of years!

People go on about illegal dumping in Cyprus but its no worse than the fly tipping in the UK or probably most countries in europe for that matter I'm not saying we should turn a blind eye to it but its a fact (albeit a bad one ) of life.

Aslo with the University of Cyprus being located in Limassol. What a great campus Episkopi Garrison could become.

Richardb,
Fylde Coast..... Actually we do , my In-laws live opposite Rosshall school and we do walk our dogs in a great park close by.

Yes we where talking about SBA's and if the SBA's close down the camps will go just like the ones in Germany full of refugees(and I dont mean the ones from Northern CY).
