RicharB: I have been running and hiking (mostly running) all over this island on and off for the past four decades. In the past few years areas outside some villages (usually lower ground) have become absolute tips! (Excuse the pun). Ravines and dry river beds have been filled with cars, bikes, fridges, w'machines and suchlike. The shooting season! What do they need on the first weekend? A truck, a couple of so called hunting dogs, guns, masses of ammunition, a truckload of rubbish to dump, bottles of local hooch and money to buy what they 'shot' on the way home!

But, it will catch up with the locals, there have already been reports of rat problems around some villages (which they keep quiet!). Unfortunately wherever you go in Cyprus there is lots of rubbish, excepting parts of Nic, and I can only hope that I the GC learn to take more care of their environment. Could it be:
Lesson one: Don't throw it out the car window, take it home and dump it in your neighbours garden!!!!!

Fylde Coast..... Actually we do , my In-laws live opposite Rosshall school and we do walk our dogs in a great park close by.

Yes we where talking about SBA's and if the SBA's close down the camps will go just like the ones in Germany full of refugees(and I dont mean the ones from Northern CY).

Rossall School ..very posh ...Then next time youre over turn left a bit further along the fleetwood road at the high school and head towards the railway lines and you'll see what I mean.

re the bases They wont be full of refugees I'm sure as refugees only congregate in countries where they can get benefits or are within striking distance of Uk

I'm not concerned either way if the British forces leave the bases I was just giving my thoughts on what they could be used for if they did

Cant argue with what you say I've been living on and off in Cyprus for last 30 years. The point I was making is that its a European problem not just particular to Cyprus.
I have a house in a mountain village (Lemythou) and I know that a big clean up has been going on over the last 12 months

Anyway as I said to dancing bear (are you red indian?) get back on track about the bases not illegal dumping

RichardB,
Ref refugees... watch this space if the SBA's close, regarding benefits with Cyprus now in the EU they will get the money and free passage to the UK no Doubt. Having said all of this if they do reduce the Military numbers then maybe make them smaller. Also one question I wanted somebody to answer , are the SBA's the same size now as they where prior to 74.

By the way not a Red Indian, due to Military background always worked with nicknames(Graham real name).

Dont think they'll come to Cyprus for benefits..... not worth signing on for.

Re the size of bases I'm not sure what they were pre 74 but in late 70s early 80s total strenght was 5500 + families

At moment there are 3500 + families

The Cypriots (i'm one of them ) need a lot of educating on how to look after the environment , just take a walk on the Limassol seafront and you will see how much rubbish is dumped on the beech. Its a disgrace and needs to be addressed , and I'm a Cypriot ( a Chiarly ? ) so no nasty comments from you natives. You are lousy drivers , heavy smokers , and throw a lot of rubbish in the streets.

I dont really care if the bases go or stay although I was more than glad that Dhekelia garrison was there in 74.
But hell I'm going to miss BFBS/BBC Radio 4's 'Today and PM' programmes, now I know that I have become my father! To expensive to listen on-line up here in the mountains!
