Joking...

That's no joke people. In the past and I'm sure even today in some parts of Turkey, Middle East and even in the UK by people from muslim countries, this practise does happen, when the parents from both sides (particularly the grooms parents) want's to know on the wedding night whether the bride is a virgin or not, so they would wait by the door to collect the bed sheet for evidence. They would even parade the damn thing to their neighbours. Talk about pressure on the newly wed couple, when you have a group of people waiting by the door.

I think it is funny that Cypriot men think they have the right to call Cypriot women materialistic and what not-mostly because they go looking for eastern european women for materialistic reasons. I also find it completely funny because my brother-when he comes to visit spends 80% of his time here shopping for clothes and other goods. every day I have to put my daughter in the car for about 10-12 hrs so I can chauffer him around to shop. He wants to eat out all 3 meals and he doesnt ever spend any time with us. When they leave I am exhausted and dare I say somewhat relieved because I dont have to shop anymore. On a rare occasion that I am not feeling good , he tries to guilt trip me by huffing and puffing and calling me hypocondiac. My husband had to have a "special" talk with him about how I am not his slave(LOL). I guess what I am trying to say is maybe Cypriot women ARE materialistic but the last one to point the finger should be the Cypriot men.

Less than 100 years ago it was quite common in many remote villages in Cyprus for the bed shits to be paraded in the village on Monday following the wedding. The parents of the bride wanted to prove to all that their daughter was a virgin , things of course have moved on.
Did you also know that in the 19th century London visitors to the London Zoo would take along their children to see the animals and feed the lions and tigers with live cats. Things have moved on of course.

I get the impression that Cypriot families and similair to Indian families. It is very important to be close to your familiy and that the men are definatley in charge and rule the house.

I get the picture that the men are more superior than women

:D :D

My impression is that Cypriot women can be quite jealous and possessive of their children in general, and over-protective as well. That's natural I guess, to a certain extent.

As for the materialistic approach, well, if you're quite sure your husband sleeps around, then I think the only real security that a woman can feel may be in controlling the purse strings. That's not denying that there are genuinely greedy women who only care for appearances.

These are all big generalisations, and I know plenty of content couples and super women here. It's also up to the kids to become independent, that's an important process that they have to discover on their own.
