Living in Cyprus

Postby shiningstar » Tue Aug 01, 2006 1:10 pm

Hello everybody!

I plan to move to Cyprus next year along with my boyfriend cause he will do his MBA there and i was wondering maybe u can give me some more details about the life there.
I mean we will have to find a house, job and everything else. How much is the rent there and under what conditions? Is it really hard to find a job when u dont know the greek language (i say that for me cause im only in the beginning with learning greek, my boyfriend is greek so.. no problem there)? What other things i should know before moving there?
Thanks for any help that u can give me!

Hi Adriana

You should look back over the various posts here which cover cost of living, rent, the difficulty of getting a job here etc.

If you have any specific questions then, please feel free to ask.

Life is varied, depending on which town you live in.

Where will you be moving to?

We will be living in Nicosia from what i know so far but slim chances to live in another city. I read some things about Cyprus in general, but im interested in more things to know. I would like to get a job as a baby sitter in the beginning cause i have experience in that. How is this thing seen there? I mean what are the easy jobs that u can get in the beginning till u get used to the new enviroment and learn the language?

I suspect there are not too many opportunities for baby sitting because of Cypriot family structures, which provide much more support than that common in the UK. But maybe it is different in Nicoisa with lots of 'professional' couples living away from their parents?

Many middle class families have maids here - as they are so cheap!

Maybe choose to live somewhere where there are plenty of other expats living, that need to have child minders. Advertise yourself in the English magazines, in Paphos there are some excellent ones. Cyprus Living, Paphos Post, Grapevine, to name but a few also in the English press Cyprus Mail, and Cyprus Weekly.

Good Luck

I have to admit it is hard living in Nicosia I agree the coast is great not a big expat community here. I moved here in April and it is hard to break into unless you are a cypriot

Rent is not too bad cy£250 - 300 pm for 2 bedroomed flat. But unless you speak Greek then it will be hard for you to find work as has been said there is not much of a tourist industry in Nicosia and only a few ex pats.
If you are unqualified pay is also quiet poor only £400-£500 pm.
Sorry if I sound pessamistic but it really is quiet hard.

Taking your rent into account - living must be b****y hard out there. I can understand why people would want to live in CYP but these wages make it near impossible to live. I suspect eating out etc is alot cheaper in Nicosia than tourist places but still.
