Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

Inviting many people is a tradition I guess, I mean I don't only think its a money thing, most GC's would feel rude if they didn't invite many people, even if they didn't know them that well! Thats just how it is! I mean everyone knows everyone anyway Lol!!:D

(Personally I love Cypriot weddings!! It's a chance to have a good knees up with your familly and friends! :D )

I always found the weddings in Cyprus to be very boring LOL
imagine shaking peoples hands for 3hrs on such a special day......its crap!! its not like they want all those people to be there - its more a money making event
the close relatives and friends are the ones that stay in the end anyway.......everyone leaves after half an hour!!

we had 340 guests at our wedding in Sydney 7yrs ago - it cost our parents $15,000 for the reception and my hubby and I forked out other costs (wedding dress, bridal party clothing, cars, photos, church etc) another $10,000
and we got about $30,000 in money gifts and more gifts for the home
but we enjoyed the whole day and danced and partied till the wee hours of hte morn!

anastacia c , you are referring to the very recent custom of having weddings in hotels , where as you say people come to shake hands give an envelope and depart. For me at least the typical Cypriot wedding is the one that takes place in a large modern hall that seats up to 2000 or more people all having a meal and participating in this very happy event. The money the couple receive is part of tradition and it does help the young couple to start their married life with a little of their own money in their pocket. The recent as I said custom of Hotel "swimming pool " receptions is mostly done by the city people , give me a good village wedding any time.

That doesn't really happen anymore.

You get a meal at the weddings now days, but it is nowhere near as pleasant an experience as in the UK.

Weddings are much nicer in the UK and the whole day generally is such a pleasant day for the couple and the guests. I think the word I am looking for is it is so much more civilized. Here basically you go in, hand the money to the couple in a white envelope and congratulate them, wait in the queue to get your buffet meal and drink, sit down eat, and then leave unless you are a close relative.

When my husband and I made the mistake of eloping... my mom didnt speak to me until I had a "real wedding"-around 6 months. By then I was 3 months pregnant and refused to travel so she came, brought everyone she could and made me have a wedding for them. She turned down my wedding gown made me get a different one...My husband tells everyone we had to have a wedding just for my family. It kinda makes me feel embarrassed LOL.

Andry , a small sacrifice to make your parents happy it was your wedding but it was mummy's and daddy's girl getting married , the proudest moment of their lives , as indeed was my proudest moment when my daughter got married.

no no the boring weddings are the ones that are held in huge halls with 2000 guests......the close relatives stay towards till the end - all other guests rush off as they have another 10 weddings to attend to!
the ones at the hotel are considered 'upper class' arent they??

Ive only ever being to one traditional cypriot wedding - held in a village - tables lined in the street
I wouldnt be happy as a bride dancing in dirt LOL

I do not agree with doing what your parents want to make them happy. What about what YOU want. Its your most special day. and yes its one for them to be proud of, but its your life and you day to rememberhow you want to remember it. it should be no other way. Parents should respect that fact.

I had an English wedding and although I am christened Greek orthodox (my dad is cypriot) as is my husband this was not received well by the inlaws but they soon got used to it and really enjoyed the day.

we did this beacuse I would not have understood what the preist was saying to me and I just didnt like the idea of me being the bride doing it for other people.
