Seriously though, since my sister moved to Arradipou, she is finding around 10 invites to weddings a month in her mailbox, weddings involving people she has no idea who they are.

Your sister doesnt have to go to the weddings. It is a custom to invite everybody to celebrate with you on your biggest day but that is not to say they HAVE to come. Even my mom who has lived in her town her whole life doesnt go to all the weddings she gets invited to.

My daughter had her Greek Cypriot wedding last November in a fanstastic venue where just under 2000 guests sat down to a sumptious meal and were entertained by a bouzouki band. Had a brilliant tiime .

yes believe it or not, they do that to go eat for free and pay nothing for it. In my town everyone knows who does it too. After a while they just kind of become obvious. When my best friend got married, they found lots of envelopes that were empty. She still got a bunch of money though.

You know, to be honest, I haven't actually been to that many weddings in Cyprus, although what annoys me is the fact that the bride and groom have to shake everyones hand!!!  In Birmingham, the weddings are pretty good, because the GC community isn't as big as the London GC community (and CY obvioulsy :D ) the weddings aren't that big...Also with the money thing, unlike an English wedding where you give a gift, instead you give money!

I've actually just been invited to a wedding, and it says on the invitation, that they only want close family to do the whole 'pin the money on the Bride and Groom' thing, I suppose they just don't feel confortable with people their not so close to giving them money....which is fair enough... :)
