Air conditioning for cars

Postby Crivens » Wed Jul 26, 2006 9:17 pm

We are hopefully going to be moving to Cyprus very soon, and own a Mazda MX5. It doesn't have air conditioning however and want it fitted for the hot weather in Cyprus. My dad, who lives in Limassol, checked with a Mazda dealer and they said they don't fit new units, only fix old ones, as every car over there has air con as standard.

Is this true? If so what happens when a unit completely blows up? Failing that, does anyone know of a company that will fit a new AC unit to a car (hopefully for Mazda, but a generic one that works will be fine)? If so, how much is it?

If not then is there anywhere I can buy the unit itself so I can get it fitted in Cyprus? Can't find it anywhere online. My thinking here is that the fitting costs will probably be much lower in Cyprus. In the UK we were quoted £900 from Mazda for the AC unit and fitting. Not terrible, but I'm damn sure it will probably be half the price if I can buy the unit here then fit it in Cyprus.

Cheers

Hi,

Most new vehicles in Cyprus are fitted with aircon or climate control.

I'm not sure about Mazda and their policy on fitting aircons. Suggest you speak with your UK dealer to see if aircon can be fitted here before shipping your car over.

I have and they quoted £900. I just thought it would be a lot cheaper to get it done in Cyprus (I know AC units for a room are much cheaper to buy and fit in Cyprus).

As a guide, was quoted CYP760 five years ago for the supply and fitting of an aircon unit to my wife's MX5. Never did get it done, thats why I'm driving the damn thing and not the wife

Not a chance buying a car in Cyprus. Costs a small fortune compared to the UK (apart from brand new). Simply bring the car over as personal property and have the tax lower over 10 years (MX5 is only 2 years old so will be ok)

Not for the uk it isn't. I watched BBC breakfast the other day and the reckoned just to fit a single air con unit (ie. forget the price for the unit) into a house it cost this couple £1000GBP. Nice. Had a look on one of the Cyprus sites and will cost from about £250-300GBP to buy the unit and fit it. Suppose is just because it's not called for over here (at the minute). Swings and roudabouts really. For instance from what I've seen of Cypriot sofas they can keep them (Grannie or Trannie styling seems to be the norm). Unless you are willing to splash out at least two to three times the price as the UK. At least.

I came over for a week early July, had a hire car, most of the time had the air con on full blast. Towards the end of the week I actually found I was feeling chilly. I turned it off and opened the window and really enjoyed the warmth.

Okay, I can imagine its hell if you're stuck in traffic in Lefkosia but on the open road, I prefer the warm breeze.

Yeah, that was what I was thinking. I've been perfectly fine with the 36 degree+ temperature we have had near London recently, especially with the the roof down. Could easily take 40 degrees I feel. Just when it gets really bad and is around 50 degrees, especially stuck in traffic.

There is a guy in Larnaca that fitted my car with aircon. The car was a mercedes but he fitted a Mitsubishsi unit so anything can be done.

I dont know the name but i know its on the section facing the water after finikoudes, after the castle. Its the part where there is a sheer drop in the water. Just where there is a restaurant there called Militzis.
