Mikros is 100% right, its all about the cage. The bodywork is all to make a car look pretty and is not relied upon at all to minimise impact, hence so many modern cars have plastic panels. I have had 3 Mercedes A-Classes and they are excellent in head on impacts. the steering column collapses so there is no impact in your chest. The entire engine slides under the car. If the impact is againts something extremely heavy like a Rnage Rover or a Lorry then the lighter car may be thrown several metres but the only the crumple zones will get damaged, nearly always the cage saves the driver. This is all on the assumption that a seat belt is worn, one of my friend had an accident without a seatbelt and he died after being thrown across the car and hit hios head on the cage.
