(quote) reportfrom cyprus , the foundations of our western world civilization and culture are based on the strong principles that underpin family life . I have always believed that no one owns his / her life , but that when your life and your actions affect your loved ones , then you do not have the divine right to do as you please , whether is taking drugs , committing illegal acts or indulging in any activity likely to have a profound affect on your loved ones.
Selfishness is the reason that so many marriages break down because people simply excuse their behaviour by simply saying is my life and I can do what I want where in fact the main reason is an emotional disturbance misconstrued as love , lust most likely . No one on this planet owns life.I most certainly do not own my life because actions that I take do have either a negative or a positive affect on my loved ones.
Ps . still read your paper , you are doing a good job. (unquote)
I agree with you Miltiades up to a point, selfishness and lack of taking personal responsibility, is rife. And many people think they cant change themselves. That they are not able to be in control of their actions, thoughts and desires. Of course they can be, but as i have said before they have to want to change. Love is a word thats bandied about, but what is love? if you love someone as you have said, do you give them such pain by being selfish and following your own selfish desires, no.....
Love is not just a word neither is it the chemical reaction everyone gets, to keep the human race procreating. The feeling of euphoria, many people think that is love and when it dies down as the chemicals subside, think they are not in love any more. Love is about intimacy, trust, real honesty and transparency, letting a person know all of you and you them. And communication of feelings and needs.
I have always remembered what a local once said to me a long time ago about marriage here, 'that woman have sex to get married and men get married to have sex. And men marry to have children, and women marry to have as much materialistic stuff as possible'. Doesnt sound a receipe for love, or happiness.....
So how can you love someone if you dont even know what the other persons needs are? The family is a small country in nucleous, the dynamics are the same. How many family feuds and small wars are going on between them. Its all the same thing, and where is the love, tolerance and communication or compromise. Do you think selfish wars help to resolve issues or would good communication about needs and feelings work better?
