I am a retired Brit, lived and worked in Cyprus for a total of fifteen years between 1962 - 1992. My wife and I retired here on a permanent basis in 2003, live in a 250 year old village house, embedded in the Cypriot community - we love it. BUT! As the Cypriots have become more wealthy and 'westernised', I am sad to say that they have cared less and less for their environment! Everywhere is rubbish - community tips are provided but few use them - most of the rubbish being dumped en-route to the tip! During all the years I worked and lived here I ran and hiked thousands of miles over the island, and continue to do the same today, mostly following goat tracks and the 'bondu' is littered with thousands of cars, bikes, fridges, w'machines, building waste and suchlike, simply dumped! The start of the hunting season is the worst; I have seen what is needed on that first weekend of the so-called 'hunting season' - a truck, two men, two or more guns, two or more dogs, local whisky, money to buy what they 'shot' and, a load of rubbish to dump on their way. Look at the rear of most Cypriot gardens and you can roughly judge how long the occupants have lived there simply by the age of the junk piled here and there. Old vehicles are just left anywhere. My assessment of Cypriot vehicle users is that 'driving is to a homebred Cypriot as is Ballet dancing is to a Sumo Wrestler'. Having travelled widely, it is my belief that, excepting certain countries of the so-called third world, the greater majority of Cypriots are the worst dangerous users of vehicles on the planet - drivers they are not. Cruelty to animals continues to this very day all over the island. But, that said, my wife and I love the island, our village, the greater majority of Cypriots (including charlies!), feeling of security, the sun, sea and of course the 'fresh air'.....
