Americans in Cyprus...

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

Miltiades, I've been following some of your posts. In all my life, I've not come across a bigger Cypriot fan of the U.S. than you appear to be. Undoubtedly, you are an anomaly (in a nice way).

I am an American with roots deeply embedded in Cyprus and Greece. Consequently, I often feel stuck between a rock and a hard place, and like some of my fellow American forum members, I find myself apologizing for the actions of my government. It is gratifying to know that in this day of anti-Americanism, someone from abroad finds the USA worthy of praise and appreciates the value of its superpower status, particularly in light of the alternatives.

Na eisai kala.

Filitsa

I wish Cyprus was a lot more like US... Its simply wonderful and im glad the americans understand this and appreciate/love their country... Im not talking about the Goverment, but the simple people. The Cypriots have a lot to learn from them and I hope they open up their eyes to this...

I and my gf often feel "different" because we cant find people who share our interests, and Cyprus is a really lonely place if ur different...(as in "No I dont wanna watch football for the 1000th time or go to the same cafe AGAIN!)

p.s. TGI Friday's RULE! :-)

Hello Astroboy,

What has been your experience with the U.S. (besides TGI Friday's? :)), and what do you believe Cypriots could learn from Americans? Of course, I'm over here pining away for Cyprus.

Not much of a personal experience, its just that I find myself fitting in more with the American way of life rather than the Cypriot. I find living at the States much more challenging and interesting than Cyprus.

The Cypriots need to learn how to be "independent". Here, everything is about "what my neighbor does, I will do 10x!" The Americans are more like "I mind my own business, if my neighbor needs my help, Ill help them"
Its just my humble opinion that the U.S. sets the standards that all nations should adopt to and follow but at the same time keeping their individuality...

Like I said, I want Cyprus to make its people admire their country and love their country the way the Americans feel about theirs..

Filitsa , there are I'm certain other Cypriots who value Americas contribution to the Western worlds prosperity , relative security and above all that very special gift that we must protect at all costs , freedom of speech and freedom of choice , the freedom that we all enjoy to criticise our governments actions , our religious beliefs , our equality under the law , never mind that money talks , it doesn't always , it never did with Nixon , it never did with Clinton who although never forced to resign , he was forced by the legal system to be questioned and to provide answers.
For your information I'm not connected to any Americans either by marriage or relations , and I don't even have any relatives , to the best of my knowledge , in the States. I only visited once in 1988 when I took my children to Disney , and loved every minute of it. I do not watch films so I'm not influenced by Hollywood , and I don't drink Coke either !!!
I support America because my instincts tell me that the alternative to America as a superpower would be , anathema to democratic loving people and for every one who likes and enjoys political or other debates.

Finally to echo the words of the late President Kennedy " I'm an American " (cant spell it in German ) !
Long may America continue in its role as the Superpower.

I think the quote you are thinking of was the one made on his vist to Berlin "ich bin ein Berliner" which means "I am a Berliner" This was to show his and Americas support to Berliners during the cold war when it looked as if the Soviet Union was going to squeeze the west out of Berlin by the use of Blockades and the building of the wall.
Incidently some people found the quote amusing as a berliner was the also the nickname given to a local sausage.

My history teacher told our class that it was "I am a jelly doughnut." :)

Cyprus , long ago..

It has been 50 years since I lived in Nicosia and 43 since I was last there. I want to thank the country for what is doing in a time of emergency in the area. Never meet a Cypriot I did not like except for the guy I loaned money to for a Brit. fine for rioting and he never paid me back.

Life was enjoyable for me on the island during the time of EOKA and then the Suez War on top of that. I came close to getting hurt once, but I was recognized as an American by some Turks and told to go home immediately during a riot inside the walled city. Lots of good Greek and Turkish friends and had plenty of fine times being a young single person. Loved my 1947 MG TC and got around the island to see all of it. I can see changes in everything in the photos I see of life now and am sure it is all a better life then is was way back then. My favorite spot was always Kyrenia and I hear that the Turks have let it run down from it's past beauty. Favorite watering hole, the Chez Nous run by Neitsia? who married a co-worker of mine. It was on the corner just outside the moat at the entrance of Ledra St. Lived in Crown Hotel in Ayios Demetrios. So sad that the island is split and I use to think the Turkish quarter of towns and their own villages was the way to go to get along. Guess it did not work..

I was stationed on the island working with the U.S. State Dept. Radio Relay Facility for the middle east. Our biggest location was out at Yerolakos. I was in the area Hqs in the Consulate. No more radios, just satellite communications nowdays..

Cheers to all!
