Americans in Cyprus...

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

I just heard that the Americans (I am American by-the-way) were told to stay put b/c it was too dnagerous to try and leave even with the troops they sent in to get them. Most educated Americans do know the whole North/South Cyprus thing but only if they've been exsposed to a Cypriot or know someone who knows someone. But thats just my experience. Honestly I had never heard of Cyprus until I dated a Greek Cypriot and was around he and his friends for a few years. But be sure he let me know quickly what the deal was. His dad was a big war hero and he and his brothers were in military as well. I still think he is a great person with about as much patriotism as I have ever seen.. When I was in Cyprus everyone was so nice to me. If I had the money I'd retire there in a heartbeat.. 25,000 Americans in Lebanon by-the-way.. Wow right! I too appreciate the nice comments about us! :D

Same situations for the Australians in Lebanon. Aparantly there are 25,000 AUssies there.

My opinion: If they bring Beer (Coopers preferably), then they are welcome

The American people know as much as the american media wants them to know and the way the American media wants them to know it. Americans are misconceived as ignorant but in my experience they are a very welcoming and polite people. Kind of like Cypriots but without so much partying. I think anyone that is not threatening to a place should be welcome to it. If they need to fly there so their lives can be saved so be it. Jenny you are in US now?

Miltiades, may I ask if you are American? I'm not used to comments like this from non-Americans.

Instead, I always feel like I'm apologizing for something to my non-American friends.  Right now, for example, it would be the unilateral decision to go to Iraq, the unwillingness to apologize for toppling a democracy in Iran in 1953 (which then led to the iron rule of the U.S.-supported shah - most Americans have conveniently forgotten that coup), and the unwavering support for Israel when everyone else, at least on the Security Council, is trying to condemn their (Israel's) actions. In the U.S., it's hard to disagree with the strong U.S. support for Israel without being called an anti-Semite.

I dont agree with Israel using a sledgehammer to crack a nut, I dont like Americas backing of Israel in everything they do, but I do think that civilians that need a safe place to go should be welcome anywhere regardless of race.
With regards the Cyprus question - this should have nothing to do with it!

mills chapman I'm not American but I support America , not in all of its actions especially foreign policy , because I believe that if America was not the superpower that it is , the alternative ie .Russia , China would have been not as tolerant as America is to day. The only nation that takes its President to court and removes him from office by the legal means that the constitution provides. I believe that America saved Europe from the Nazis and then introduced the Marshall plan to rebuild Europe. I believe that following 9/11 America had a duty to act and punish those responsible. The Afghanistan invasion was correct in every sense of the word. I believe that George Bush Senior should have completed the job in Iraq during the first Iraq war. As far as the present situation in Iraq , it seems a long way from establishing a peaceful democracy given that the fanatics refuse to give their elected government a chance. America accepts criticism both from home and abroad , it has a delicate balance to maintain. The Greeks have for years now blamed every nasty episode of history on America.

If China was the super power today , and if 9/11 happened in Peking , the response would have been far far more severe that the American one. The horrific events of 9/11 changed America for ever . No super power throughout history ever tolerated such a blatant attack on its soil by an enemy sworn to the destruction of America. I believe also that America being the Superpower and the leader of the Western world has no choice to use all means at its disposal to protect our way of life , our freedom of choice and speech and our democratic processes acquired over many wars and much sacrifice. I want my grand children to grow up in a safe world and above all in a free world where the have the same rights that I enjoy today, the freedom to worship or not , the freedom to marry whoever you want the freedom to express and criticize your own government's actions , as indeed is happening in America now , without the fear of persecution. These are qualities that the enemies of America would remove by force if ever they were allowed to gain the upper hand.
Iran has stated as its main aim the annihilation of Israel . Iran will not be allowed to achieve its aim.
I support a Palestinian state , I support the rights of the dispossessed , but I support a peaceful process in achieving this. I most definitely do not condone the violence and indiscriminate killings that are happening right now.
Finally America , the land of opportunity , the land that made millions of peoples dreams come true. The land that values its constitution and is prepared to fight in order to protect it. Just imagine that the Soviet Union had not collapsed but had gained the upper hand and was today spreading the communist doctrine by force throughout the Universe.
I hope I have answered just a little of why I love America.
