drive to Cyprus

Postby garthur » Sat Aug 19, 2006 2:57 pm

My nephew drove from Cork to Paphos - not literally of course - in 2000. He went via France and Italy, Greece and then over to Limassol on a ferry.

The worst bit, for him, was that his car was impounded as it was more than 3 yrs old. I think this had more to do with the fact he intended to live there rather than just visit. He married a Greek Cypriot.

PS But if you want the route he took I can find it out for you. Took him about 2 weeks.

Leave it with me. I'll e-mail him now and get him to pop it across. The trip did leave him time to do some sight-seeing en route too.

My sister and brother-in-law both live in Geroskipou. They'd been going there for years on holiday and Stephen (my nephew) joined them for Xmas one year. He met Ellada and the rest is history!!

I have e-mailed him but he'll be at work (or watching the footie)- as soon as I have anything back from him....

I would dearly love to drive across next summer - and hopefully do it in a week if sharing the driving with my other half. Well, we'll see.

Catch you soon, Tom

Hi!! I've received a reply today - unfortunately it's more vague than I had hoped for. Nevertheless, here it is (hopefully)

The route was pretty hit and miss - my best advice is to plan your next day's travelling from the road atlas the night before - write down the roads you mean to take and the exit numbers from the autoroutes etc.

But for what its worth I went from Rosslaire to Cherbourg, then to Orleans. Day 2 from Orleans to Grenoble via Lyon. Day 3 Grenoble to Toulon via Marseilles and St Tropez. Day 4 to Cannes (rest day). Day 5 Cannes to Genoa via Monaco and Monte Carlo. Day 6 to Rome via Pisa. Day 7 Rome to Bari for the ferry to Patres. Day 8 Patres to Athens. Day 8 (rest day) Athens to Peiraius for Ferry to Cyprus. Day 10 arrive Limassol.

And to think I thought he had been so organised!! Just goes to show.
Hope it helps anyway.

Hi
when we came to cyprus in 1985 we drove here.
we got the rute from AA and also got cover from them so that if we broke down anywhere in the world they would turn up and fix the car or give us a replacement etc..
from Dover we went to france Germany ugaslavia and to bereas in greece we got a ferry to limasol cyprus it was the best thing we ever did in our lives it took us a week to arrive in limasol and we stopped off every two nights in a hotel along the way.
