Coming to Cyprus

Postby Angella » Wed Jul 12, 2006 4:35 am

Hi All,
My partner and I are going to arrive in Cyprus in a couple of weeks. We are both from New Zealand and are Maori (the native race of New Zealand) in our mid-late 20's with no children. The company I work for here in NZ has given me an opportunity to experience life and work in that part of the world so I am taking the opportunity and my partner is coming with me. We will be there for 2-3months and the company is providing an apartment and transportation which is great. My partner will hopefully play Rugby in Limassol as this is the place in which we will live. We are both a bit nervous about our trip up there.... only because this is unknown territory. Any other information anyone who came from NZ may want to share with us would be awesome or anything we should know.

Welcome to the forum, one of my closest friends comes from New zealand, you will be fine, And the weather is better here. Look on it as an adventure, life is not so different because of the past british influences. I hope your partner teaches the rugby team to hukka apologise if the spellings isnt correct. Any thing you need to know just ask on here and we will help you all we can. Just keep your sense of humour and all will be ok. By the way since watching Lord of The Rings trilogy i thought New Zealand was a very beautiful place. Anyway good luck.

Hi there,
We are looking forward to the warmer weather, but the problem is, is that it's hotter than it ever gets here, so that may take some getting used to. As you may know Rugby is our national game here in NZ and life without Rugby seems to be boring.... I suppose it's great at the moment because the All Blacks have started to play so there's always some good matches to watch on T.V.... Because we are from NZ there is alot of correspondance about people coming from Europe and stuff but little about people coming from this part of the world (that's probably because we're in the middle of no-where!) I think we are just a little nervous about leaving little old NZ for the big wide world. While we have had holidays in the Pacific, Australia and a little in US we really haven't been away from home for more than 3 weeks. We just hope people are going easy going like we are down here (down under).

Angella Cyprus is so tiny with many people from all corners of the earth, You will even find other kiwis here. As far as whether you will acclimatise to the weather and culture i cant tell you, its a personal experience for everyone, but its not difficult to fit in here. My only frustration is the mentallity of the Cypriots, apart from that its a lovely island, with many good people on it so you will soon make friends, i live in paphos which has the biggest foreign community in Cyprus, I believe limmasol has a good few too, you will soon make friends i am sure.. And you have a job to come too, most of us didnt have and had to find one when we got here. Stick with the forum read back on the threads and do a bit of research.

Thanks for the kind words.... Do know if they play netball in Limassol? Or even touch rugby.... I like my partner love playing sport and I would love to continue to do so if I can. Being involved in things like sport help to build new friendships as well as have a good time and this is exactly what I'd love to do.... We want to get out and meet new people, so we don't feel so lonely! We both come from big families and are very involved in sport so we are always surrounded by wide array of people, which is what we like best.... Life is too lonely otherwise!

i dont know about the sport side of it, i do know we have a rugby team in paphos called the paphos tigers, not sure about anywhere else here, and as i am a bit of a couch potatoe, and not fit, sport here is a mystery to me but i am sure when the others here wake up they will help you. i am off to work now, its 8am here, may catch you later.. bye 4 now

There are several rugby teams and nine cricket teams, also (green) bowls in Paphos (was watching the NZ Ladies champion on TV last night).
Facilities will depend upon where you are based. There is tennis, lots of basketball and some golf.

My wife and are Brits and live on the coast, Episkopi Village, near ancient Curium (Limassol District). We are retired and go all over the island which obvioulosy has changed much since our first visit in 1961! In Pathos there are many South African Cypriots, all of whom are interested in Rugby and, I believe, many play on-island. The British have several bases on-island and the Episkopi Garrision, not far from Limassol, has a large sports complex where many Cypriot teams play Football, Rugby and even Cricket. Many of the games are just friendlies but Cypriot sport teams play against the Brits in various leagues. There are so many different nationalities now on-island that you will definately not feel out of place.

My partner will play rugby with the Limassol Crusaders, which he is quiet looking forward to. I would love to continue to play netball or even touch rugby if I possibly can. May be if the sport of netball is non-existent I could introduce it to Cyprus??? After reading a number of Posted Forums I am feeling more at ease with the move to Cyprus.... We're pretty easy-going people, happy go lucky, so I'm sure we'll slot in fine.... It would just make our day if we were to pump into another Maori in Cyprus, we'd think that was "out of this world"! Or maybe we could could teach "Haka" & "Waiata" to Cypriots to remind us of home????
